Women’s Basketball Falls to St. John Fisher in Overtime

PITTSFORD, NY – St. John Fisher scored 13 of the overtime's first 14 points to secure an 85-72 come-from-behind victory over Hartwick's women's basketball team on Friday night at Manning & Napier Gym in Pittsford. Four Hawks were in double figures, led by Fritzi Flores' (Bergenfield, NJ/Paramus Catholic).
Hartwick led by a 15-point margin with under three minutes to go in regulation before the Cardinals stormed back to force overtime. The Hawks, who led for all but four seconds of the second half, took a 68-53 lead on a pair of Flores free throws with 3:01 left. Fisher would score the next 13 points, making 4-of-4 shots from the floor and 5-of-5 from the line to close to within two just two minutes later.
Flores tacked one of two free throws for a 64-61 edge with 36 seconds to go before another Cardinal bucket closed the gap to one with 17 ticks left. Fisher fouled and freshman Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) sank her two free throws to regain the three-point lead four seconds later, but Colleen Maloney sank a three-pointer with 2.5 seconds remaining to force the extra session.
In the overtime, Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Acad.) gave the Hawks a one-point advantage, but an Amanda Lax three-point play would trigger a 13-0 run to put the hosts in front for good.
Flores tied for a game-high with nine rebounds and she added game-highs of six assists and four steals. Freshmen Katrina Caulfield (Palmer, MA/Palmer) and Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of Holy Names) each scored 12 points for the Hawks. The pair also combined for 13 boards. Purcell ended the game with 11 points.
Maloney led all scorers with 21 points for Fisher (11-9, 8-3 E8). Stephanie Sweeney and Lax each added 16 points and Meghan Soja reached double digits with 11.
Arduini (10) and Flores (7) combined for 17 points to lead Hartwick in the first half. The Cardinals led by as many as six in the opening period but the Hawks shot 50% from the field and finished the half on a 17-3 run for a 37-29 lead at intermission.
Hartwick closed out the game hitting 38% from the floor and 71% (20-for-28) from the free-throw line. They also out-rebounded the Cardinals 41-35. Fisher hit 46% as a team from the floor and registered an 82% (27-for-33) showing from the line. The Cardinals were also perfect from the field in the overtime making all four shots and they made 10-of-13 free-throws.
            Hartwick (6-11, 3-6 E8) plays tomorrow at Alfred University at 2 p.m.
