HAMILTON, NY - Hartwick men's soccer was less than a minute away from earning a 0-0 draw at Colgate University, but the Raiders scored the game-winner with 46 seconds left in the second overtime to secure the victory on Wednesday night in Hamilton, NY.
Colgate (2-0) picked up the winning goal following a long throw-in in the Hartwick end of the field. With less than a minute left, defender Barrett Metzger's throw made its way into the box. The ball found fellow back Patrick Letourneau who pushed the ball onto Colgate captain Mike Reese to finish off past 'Wick keeper Tom Buckner (Oxford, England/Henley College).
The Raiders, who were picked by the Patriot League coaches to win the conference title this season, finished the game with a 20-4 advantage in shots. The hosts had a few solid scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of play, but Buckner, who finished the half with five stops, kept the game scoreless.
Hartwick registered only its first shot of the night early in the second half on a Cleyon Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Berkshire School) effort. Colgate keeper Grant Reed made the save, however, which was his only stop of the game.
Many of the Hawks' scoring opportunities in the game came from crossed balls into the Colgate box. The Hawks, though, were unable to get on the end of any of the services, which included a pair of corner kicks in the first overtime session.
Tyler Bailey (Spencer, NY/Binghamton Univ.) took the Hawks' lone shot of the two overtimes but it was off target and over the Colgate goal. Buckner ended the game with seven saves.
The Hawks slip to 1-1 with the loss. It also drops 'Wick's all-time record against the Raiders to 37-6-4.
Hartwick hosts Niagara University in its home opener on Sunday. Kickoff begins at 7:30 p.m. on Elmore Field.
