Hawks Drop Match to Appalachian State

CONWAY, SC – Hartwick came away empty on its South Carolina trip after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Appalachian State on Sunday at the Coastal Carolina/adidas Tournament. The Hawks, who lost 3-0 to #24 Ohio State on Friday, fall to 1-3-2 on the season. The Mountaineers improve to 4-2-1.
All three Mountaineer goals came in an 11:37 span in the first half of play. Two tallies came from junior Ryan Lavigne.
Sean Dreybus opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Stanley Broaden started the play as he broke down the right sideline. He crossed the ball to Dreybus who found the left side of the goal past Hartwick keeper Tom Buckner (Oxford, England/Henley College).
In the 23rd minute, Lavigne scored his first goal of the day with Broaden earning another assist. Less than four minutes later, Lavigne was at it again as he scored on a 22-yard shot to the right side of the goal that eluded Buckner.
“We didn't start the game well at all,” said head coach John Scott following the game. “We gave up three goals on three shots and that can't happen. We played a more spirited second half but we can't start the game that way.”
The Mountaineers held a 13-4 advantage in shots for the game and a 7-1 edge in corners. The Hawks were able to generate some dangerous balls in the box throughout the course of the match but were never able to get on the end of them.
Freshman Jhevaughn Beckford (Kingston, Jamiaca/Wolmer's Boys') recorded two of the Hawks' shots on goal in the game.
“We need to get some results next weekend as we head into Mid-American Conference play,” added Scott.
The Hawks travel to the University of New Hampshire for two matches at the 22nd Annual Nike Fall Classic next weekend. Hartwick plays Central Connecticut Friday at 4:30 p.m. and the host institution Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
