Kate Purcell's double-double helped Hartwick to its first win of the season Saturday.
Box Score

NEW YORK, NYKate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) notched a double-double with game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds and 10 Hawks made it into the scoring column on Saturday as Hartwick rolled to a 54-34 victory over St. Joseph's College – Brooklyn in the third-place game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament. With the victory, the Hawks even up their overall record at 1-1.

The Hawks did not shoot the ball particularly well but they made up for it on the defensive end and on the glass. Hartwick out-rebounded the Bears by a huge 53-32 margin. The Hawks' total included 19 offensive boards. The 'Wick defense forced 14 turnovers in the game, which it turned into 16 points.

Purcell dropped in 13 of her points in the first half alone as the Hawks built a nine-point lead at the break. She finished the tournament averaging over 18 points and seven boards. At the conclusion of the evening, she was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Freshman forward Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow HS) chipped in nine points and eight rebounds for 'Wick. Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) scored eight points and Katrina Caulfield (Palmer, MA/Palmer HS) grabbed eight boards.

The Bears held a 6-4 lead through the opening five and a half minutes before a Purcell three-pointer would give Hartwick the lead for good. It also ignited a 12-2 run which handed the Hawks a 19-8 edge at the midway point of the stanza.

The Hawks held the Bears scoreless for five minutes, 38 seconds before a free throw from Janine Doran finally gave St. Joe's its ninth point with 7:48 left. It would mark one of several large spans of time in which Hartwick would limit the Bears offensively.

Dumas' two free throws with 2:50 left in the half gave 'Wick its biggest lead up until that point, 28-13, before the Bears would shave the advantage down to nine, 29-20, at the break.

Both teams were cold in the early going of the second half.  The Bears and Hawks combined for only 16 points through ten minutes of action in the half. Brittany Cervino's bucket with 11:30 left cut the Hawks' edge to just five points, 33-28, but Hartwick would dominate the rest of the way.

The Blue and White allowed just six Bears' points after Cervino's basket, holding them to 2-of-12 shooting and forcing five turnovers. The Hartwick offense, on the other hand, went 8-for-16 over the span, and dished seven assists to pull away.

Freshman Sammy Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg HS) scored six points to add to the Hawks' offense in the game. Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith HS) added five points and four rebounds.

Hartwick returns to campus and will host Union College in its home opener on Tuesday evening. The Hawks and Dutchwomen tip off at 6 p.m. at Lambros Arena.
