GENEVA, NY- The Hartwick men's basketball team returned to the court after the holiday break to face the host Hobart Statesmen in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon. After holding an eight-point lead in the first half, the Statesman pulled away for a 74-59 victory at Bristol Gymnasium. Hobart evens its record at 4-4 while the Hawks fall to 6-4.
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) led Hartwick with 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting. He also added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) contributed 15 points and added 10 rebounds.
Richie Bonney scored 25 points while shooting 11-of-15 from the floor and added eight rebounds. Cole Smothers came off the bench and scored 14 points with three blocks and two rebounds. Stefan Thompson scored 10 points and dished out a game-high eight assists.
Bradley converted a layup 19 seconds into the game to give Hartwick the early 2-0 advantage. A 15-6 Hobart run covering over six minutes of game time gave the Statesmen a 15-8 lead with 12:34 showing on the game clock. Hartwick would climb its way back as Bradley's layup kicked off a 10-2 run to give the Hawks an 18-17 lead at 5:54 of the first half.
Hobart would come back with a three-pointer by Connor Rehbaum to move ahead 22-18 at the 4:30 mark. A Bradley layup would cut the deficit to just two points, 22-20, at 4:08. The Statesmen closed out the half on a 10-4 run to lead 32-24 at halftime.
In the second half, Suderley converted the second of two free throws to bring the Hawks to within 32-25 at 18:44. Smothers made both of his free throw attempts to give Hobart a nine-point lead with 18:30 on the clock. A 16-6 Statesmen run gave them a double-digit lead of 48-31 at 12:23.
'Wick would fight to keep the contest close and not let Hobart run away with the game. After Bonney's layup with a little over six minutes remaining put the Statesmen ahead 60-45,
Victor Angeline (East Brunswick, NJ/Rutgers Prep) hit back-to-back three-point shots for the Hawks to close the deficit to 60-51 with 5:05 left on the clock. Hobart would answer with a three-point basket from Thompson to go ahead 63-51 at 4:35 to pull away for the win.
The Statesmen shot 47.2% from the floor while limiting the Hawks to 40.3% shooting. Hobart made more free throws (18) than Hartwick attempted (16) and the Statesmen enjoyed a 38-32 rebounding advantage.
Hobart made nearly 43% of its three-point attempts to Hartwick's 21.1%. While the Hawks led in the paint 38-28, the Statesmen got a lift from its bench to outscore the Hawks' bench 25-14.
The Hawks return to the hardwood on January 4
th to face Nazareth in Empire 8 Conference play. Game time will be at 6 p.m.
