Box Score

CANTON, NY – Host St. Lawrence University outscored visiting Hartwick 16-4 over the final 3:17 to earn a 58-51 come-from-behind win on Friday night at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton, NY. A three-pointer from Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) with 3:37 remaining in the game gave Hartwick a 47-42 lead but the Saints would score 14 consecutive points over the next 3:24 to pull out the win.

The loss snaps the Hawks' six-game win streak and drops their overall record to 6-2. The Saints improve to 3-3.

Foglia led all scorers with 18 points for Hartwick. Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) added a double-double of 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds and Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow HS) contributed 13 points.

"I thought we played hard tonight," said Hartwick head coach Missy West. "I was proud of our players' effort and they really came to play. But down the stretch, we didn't play smart and missed some key free throws."

The Hawks, who led by as many as 10 points in the first half, held the Saints scoreless over the opening 10 minutes of action on the night. The 'Wick defense forced St. Lawrence into misses on its first nine shots and forced six Saint turnovers before Cassie St. Hilaire finally connected on a layup with 9:52 left in the half to make the score 9-2.

After the Saints pulled to within three, 14-11, with just over six minutes left, the Hawks went on a 9-2 run over ta three-minute stretch to take a 23-13 advantage. SLU narrowed the gap with seven straight to close the gap to three, 23-20, at the break.

The Saints opened the second half with a three-pointer to briefly tie the score, but the Hawks went in front on a Purcell layup with 17:40 on the clock and they led for the next 15 minutes. St. Lawrence stuck with the Hawks, not allowing them to pull away at any point as 'Wick never led by more than six in the half.

Hartwick led by its largest margin of the second frame after a Dumas layup with 6:23 remaining made the score 44-38. The Hawks would have two more looks to increase the margin but couldn't convert. Two free throws each from Allison Cady and Kelly Legg over a 56-second span made it a two-point gap, 44-42, before Foglia's three made it 47-42.

Legg would then make a layup and Kara McDuffee drained a three-pointer to tie the score with under three minutes left. The Hawks missed the front end of a one and one and two more free throws from Cady would give the Saints their first lead after 37 minutes, 36 seconds of action.

Hartwick would miss its next three shots from the floor and the Saints made 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to put the game away. Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) hit two from the line and Purcell made a layup but it was too little too late for Hartwick in the 58-51 defeat.

"The stretch where we didn't score for three minutes hurt us," added West. "We simply cannot afford to have those types of droughts against good teams."

The Hawks, who made on 28% of its shots in the first half, connected on 43.5% (10-of-23) in the second. The Saints, however, were slightly better making 50% (10-of-20) in the all-important second half. St. Lawrence also made 17-of-19 free throws, including 14-of-16 in the second stanza.

Cady ended the game with a team-best 14 points for SLU. She was a perfect 7-of-7 from the line. Legg finished the game with 12 points and McDuffee added nine.

Foglia dished out five assists, sank three treys, and grabbed three steals for Hartwick. Dumas made six of her nine shots from the floor on the night.

The Hawks will be idle for the next 10 days until they begin play at the 2012 Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Hartwick plays Randolph-Macon on December 17 at 6 p.m. in the first of two games. The Hawks wrap up play on December 19 against nationally twenty-fifth ranked Mary Washington.
