ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick battled back from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to pull to within two points with under a minute to play, but the Hawks could not connect on a two-point conversion with 37 seconds to go in a 28-26 loss to Frostburg State on Saturday on Homecoming and Reunion Weekend at Wright Stadium.
The Hawks surrendered a pair of third-quarter touchdowns as the visiting Bobcats took a 28-14 lead. Early in the fourth quarter, freshman running back
Joseph Rosiecki (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central HS) capped a 16-play, 70-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to make it an eight point game.
Maxwell Sergovich's (Watervliet, NY/Catholic Central) ensuing extra point sailed wide left.
Hartwick got a stop on defense but punted the ball back to the Bobcats with 5:59 left in the contest. The Hawks' defense, keyed by a 3
rd down sack from junior defensive linemen
Joe Seney (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) and
Jim DeRosa (Centereach, NY/Centereach), forced another FSU punt and 'Wick had the ball down eight points with 4:18 to go.
The Hawks used 15 plays to go 76 yards for the touchdown to bring them within two. 'Wick converted on third down five times in the drive, including a
Keegan Corbett (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) to
John Horner (Bedford Hills, NY/Fox Lane) 8-yard touchdown pass on 3
rd and 7.
On the two-point conversion, Corbett was looking for wide receiver
Frankie Molina (Middletown, NY/Middletown HS) in the back of the end zone, but his pass was just high and out of his reach.
The Hawks needed to get the ball back and elected for the on-side kick.
Alex Tesoriero's (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia HS) effort popped up past the 'Wick 45 yard-line and a Hartwick player got his hand on it but neither team could control the ball which went out of bounds and allowed the Bobcats to then run out the clock.
Corbett ended the day with 218 yards passing and three touchdowns. He converted 19-of-40 passes with one interception.
Tanner Williams (Eagle Bridge, NY/Hoosick Falls) made five catches for 82 yards and one score.
Chris Okonski (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna HS) caught five balls for 34 yards and Molina made four receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground, the Hawks gained 213 yards on 37 carries.
Kurtis Ahart (Spencer, NY/Spencer Van Etten) rushed for 87 yards on 15 carries,
Nick Knauer (Wynantskill, NY/Tamarac HS) rushed nine times for 73 yards, and Rosiecki ran the ball 13 times for 53 yards.
DeRosa and linebacker
Bryan Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon HS) had eight and seven tackles, respectively, to pace the Hawks. Defensive back
Clyde Miller (Rochester, NY/Glenville State College) added six tackles and an interception.
FSU jumped out to the early lead as Teron Tyre intercepted Corbett's first pass of the day on the Hartwick 29 yard-line and took it back for a touchdown. The pick-six gave the Bobcats a 7-0 edge just 54 ticks into the game.
The Hawks responded on their next drive to tie the game. Ahart rushed four times for 23 yards and Corbett connected with Molina (19 yards) and twice to Williams (7 yards and 21 yards). On the second pass to Williams, he received the ball on the left side line and turned the corner on his defender and took the ball in for the touchdown.
Hartwick would take the lead after forcing a Bobcat punt. A couple of big rushes by Ahart for gains of 20 and 11 yards and another 20-yard gain by Rosiecki would set up a touchdown pass from Corbett to Molina. Sergovich added the PAT and 'Wick led 14-7.
The Bobcats drove 62 yards in over seven minutes on their next possession and Chuky Iweh ran it in for a one-yard touchdown on 4
th and goal after the Hawks had stuffed FSU three straight times, and the game was tied at 14-14.
'Wick had the ball deep in FSU territory late in the half but missed out on cashing in some additional points. On a second and goal from the Frostburg 7 and only six seconds left, the Hawks took too long to attempt a pass and it sailed out of bounds as time expired.
The Bobcats took the lead for good on the opening possession of the second half. Quarterback Ken Emmons completed a 9-yard pass to Antonio Wood for the go-ahead score. Later in the quarter, JD Hook's one-yard touchdown capped a 12-play, 62-yard drive to put the visitors up by two scores.
Hartwick closed out the day with 431 yards of offense to Frostburg's 266. The Bobcats were led by Emmons' 179 yards on 19-of-27 passing.
