Box Score

ONEONTA, NY – Chris Thorsheim scored the game's only goal at 31:05 of the first half on a penalty kick to lift visiting Bucknell University to a 1-0 win over Hartwick's men's soccer team on Tuesday night under the lights of Elmore Field. The Hawks had chances to score, including a penalty kick of their own 11 minutes prior to Thorsheim's tally but they were not able to solve Bison goalkeeper Clarke Fox.

The Hawks had a perfect opportunity to take the early edge at the 20:03 after Marc Russell (Glasgow, Scotland/Woodfarm HS) was hauled down in the Bucknell box resulting in the spot kick. David Styles (Bognor Regis, England/St. Phillip Howard) stepped up for the shot and he hit it to Fox's left but the keeper made a diving effort to keep it out.

Less than 14 minutes from halftime, the Bison were given a penalty of their own on a Hartwick foul inside their own 18-yard box. Thorsheim made no mistake, forcing Mateo Munarriz (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) to guess the wrong way, and putting his shot to the keeper's right for the 1-0 edge.

Just over the three minutes later, Hartwick was denied by the woodwork. Senior Tim Crawford (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) had the ball deep in Bucknell territory near the corner. He played a bouncing ball to the top of the box where junior Rio Dhat (Auckland, New Zealand/Epping Boys HS) hit a one-timed left-footer up and over Fox but it cruelly ricocheted off the far post and out.

At the halftime whistle, the Bison went into the locker room up by the single goal. The visitors would hold a 6-3 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The Hawks were dangerous in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. With roughly 15 minutes gone, Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) served a corner into the Bison box but it was played back out to him. He played another ball to the far post that Jhevaughn Beckford (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys' School) could not get a good foot on just outside the six-yard box.

Less than five minutes later 'Wick had its best chance of the half. A Styles' corner kick bounced inside the box and substitute Jamie O'Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk) headed the ball towards goal off the bounce from in close. Fox came up with his second save though, this one a diving effort to maintain the Bison lead.

The Hawks would have the ball in the Bison end for much of the rest of the half but could not muster another shot as Bucknell would come away with the win.

Munarriz would finish with three saves for Hartwick with Clarke making two stops for BU.

The game also served as Hartwick Senior Night. Crawford, Will Broomfield (Brighton, England/Cloud Community College), and Matthew Robertson (Banchory, Scotland/Binghamton U.) were honored prior to the match.

With the loss, Hartwick falls to 5-8-4 overall. The Bison, which entered the game ranked 10th in the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, improves to 11-5-1.

The Hawks await the location of the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament, as well as, their semifinal opponent. The field will be decided this weekend. The Hawks' will be making their first appearance in the playoffs in the last four seasons.
