Box Score

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick was less than 10 minutes away from claiming its first Mayor's Cup crown since 2007 but a late Cornell tally in regulation and another deep into the second overtime handed the Big Red the title instead.

Garth Stam Defensive Most Valuable Player Patrick Slogic's header with 9:16 remaining in the second half tied the match for Cornell after the Hawks had held the lead for more than 70 minutes. Conor Goepel, who was selected as the Jim Lennox Offensive Most Valuable Player, scored the game-winner with 3:47 left in the second extra session to seal the comeback for the Big Red.

Hartwick head coach John Scott praised his team after the match for a resounding effort. "I felt we deserved better today, no question. This is a great bunch to work with and they definitely deserved more on the weekend."

David Styles (Bognor Regis, England/St. Phillip Howard) gave Hartwick the lead in the ninth minute off a pass from Jamie O'Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk). O'Grady sent a ball through the Cornell defense springing Styles on a breakaway. He calmly finished to the far post with a shot that eluded Cornell keeper Zach Zagorski for the 1-0 lead.

For the remainder of the first half, the Hawks held Cornell in check, not allowing the Big Red any decent scoring chances. The half ended with 'Wick holding the lead and both teams registering just two shots.

Early in the second half, Will Broomfield (Brighton, England/Cloud Community College) had a chance to add to Hartwick's lead. After a Cornell clearance, O'Grady played the ball back into the mix to Broomfield at the top of the box. He took a touch and fired but the ball went high of the target.

The Big Red had its best chance of the match in the 59th minute. A short cross from the left side was knocked down by Hartwick keeper Mateo Munarriz (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) and the ball sat perfectly for Atticus DeProspo who was running onto the ball. He hammered a shot but Munarriz recovered to deny him with a save from in close.

Just under five minutes later, Marc Russell (Glasgow, Scotland/Woodfarm) and Max Walcott (London, England/West Herts College) each had shots from in close right on top of one another. Zagorski, however, stuffed both of them to keep it a one-goal game.

Hartwick kept Cornell off the scoreboard until Stephen Reisert beat a defender down the right flank and got to the end line. He floated a cross to the far post for Slogic who headed it in to the near post to tie the game.

With under five minutes left in regulation, 'Wick came close to retaking the lead. Russell possessed the ball 40 yards from goal and sent a ball through to Chris Walters (Amherst, NY/Nichols School) to run onto. He broke in alone with Zagorski but his shot was stopped by the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Both teams had corners in the first overtime and put balls into the danger areas but neither team converted.

Zagorski started the game-winning play for the Big Red off a punt. His kick traveled roughly 80 yards to Sebastian Scales up front. Scales' glancing header traveled to the corner of the Hartwick box and both Goepel and Munarriz went for the 50-50 ball. Goepel just beat Munarriz to the ball, pushing it past him while being knocked off his feet. He recovered and had time to tuck the ball into an open net before any Hartwick defenders could get to it to put the game away.

The Big Red would hold an 11-7 edge in shots for the match and a 6-5 advantage in corners. Both Munarriz and Zagorski would make four saves on the day.

Despite the result, Scott was pleased with the play of the Hawks and the outlook for the squad moving forward. "We have guys who care and are hurting after today's game but I'm 100% certain they will respond and get better before we play again next weekend. We're making progress and working hard but we need to work even harder and show strong character for what's ahead."

Broomfield and Styles were selected to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts. Zagorski, Reisert, Jake Rinow and Ben Williams joined them from Cornell. Robert Morris' Neco Brett, Devon Williams and Miro Cabrera as well as Detroit's Nathan Steinwascher and Adam Bedell received All-Tournament honors.

The Hawks travel to the Southern Methodist Tournament next weekend in Dallas, TX.
