ONEONTA, NY- Senior forward
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) led all scorers with 29 points and added 12 rebounds as the men's basketball team never trailed against Ithaca and defeated the Bombers 92-50 on Friday night at Lambros Arena. It was the Empire 8 opener for both teams. The Hawks even their overall record at 5-5 and are 1-0 in the Empire 8 while the Bombers fall to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the E8.
The 92 points by the Hawks are the most scored against Ithaca since 1972 when Hartwick also scored 92. The 42-point margin of victory is the largest for Hartwick over IC since a 91-55 win in the 1965-66 season.
Suderley was 11-of-16 from the floor and 6-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc as the Hawks shot 48.6% overall as a team.
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) added 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals and
Matt Petruccione (Saratoga Springs, NY/Bishop Maginn) tacked on 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Ithaca received 13 points for Sam Bevan who led the team in scoring. Frank Mitchell had a team-high nine rebounds.
The Hartwick defense came up big as it forced 16 IC turnovers. The Hawks turned those turnovers into 21 points while the Bombers only had four points off of eight 'Wick miscues.
The outcome of the game was never on doubt as Hartwick held a 47-19 lead at halftime. The Hawks held the Bombers to just 28.6% (8-of-28) shooting in the first period while 'Wick was 48.6 % (18-of-37) in field goals. Suderley did most of the damage in the first frame as he nearly had a double-double with 18 points and nine boards.
"It was a great team effort," said head coach
Todd McGuinness after the game. "The effort and intensity that we gave was the best of the season. Our seniors played well and we need to match the intensity tomorrow against Utica."
The closest the game was occurred 45 seconds into the contest after a layup from the Bombers' Mitchell. The Hawks then scored 10 straight points to lead 10-2 at 14:40. The Hawks led by as much as 16 points, 25-9, with 8:39 showing on the game clock. IC would chip into the 'Wick lead and trailed 25-14 with 7:11 left to play in the first half. That would be as close as the Bombers would get all night as Hartwick then embarked on a 22-5 run to close out the half.
It was all Hawks in the second half as their advantage never got below 20 points. Hartwick outscored 45-31 in the period.
IC did not make a three-point shot the entire game as it went 0-for-12. Hartwick, meanwhile, converted 45.2% of its three-point attempts.
The Hawks outrebounded the Bombers 45-38. Hartwick also picked up six steals and had five blocked shots with
Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) accounting for three of them. The 'Wick bench outscored Ithaca's 29-19 as
Glenn Gavan (Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and
Peter Melanson (Little Compton, RI/Bishop Staing) contributed six points each for the Hawks.
Hartwick will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Utica. Game time at Lambros Arena will be at 3 p.m.
