ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick dropped a four-set match in their second contest of the 2014 Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament on Saturday at Lambros Arena. The two teams split the first two sets with the Lakers taking the first, 25-22, and the Hawks grabbing the second, 25-20. Oswego took sets three and four by scores of 25-21 ad 25-15.
In the opening set with the score 17-all, the Lakers would register three straight points for a 20-17 edge. A
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) kill for the Hawks pulled them within one, 21-20, but four straight Oswego points put the visitors one point from the set. Hartwick got the next two points but got no closer as the Lakers were up 1-0.
Hartwick took the lead in the second set, 5-4, and the never relinquished it. The Hawks led by as many as nine points, 21-12. Oswego mounted a comeback, tallying seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to four, 23-19. A Laker service error followed by a Baril kill finished off the set and the Hawks were all even at 1-1.
The third set went back and forth with the Hawks holding the advantage through much of the first half of the set. Senior
Christine Confer (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) delivered a kill to put Hartwick up 13-12 but the Lakers would rally to take a three-point advantage. 'Wick had a rally of its own to take a 19-18 lead but seven of the last night points went to the Lakers.
The Hawks stuck with the Lakers in the fourth set, trailing by just a 12-11 margin. But Oswego would outscore the Hawks 13-4 to close the set as the Lakers scored the 3-1 victory.
Hartwick later wrapped up tournament play against Brockport. The Hawks got off to a great start taking the first set, 25-21. The Golden Flyers edged out the Hawks by three in the second set, 25-22, and then took a 2-1 lead in the third after outlasting the hosts, 26-24. Brockport closed out the 3-1 victory, 25-18, in the fourth set.
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing),
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland), and Baril each registered double-doubles for the match. Armstrong had 18 digs and 10 kills, Kinzel had 28 assists and 10 digs, with Baril adding 17 digs and a team-high 11 kills. Armstrong would be named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) registered a team-high 23 digs.
Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) contributed nine kills and eight digs.
The Hawks (7-17) have a midweek game at Cobleskill on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
