ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick women's volleyball fell in its first two matches to two 20-win teams on Friday night at the Oneonta State Dig Pink Invitational at Dewar Arena. The Hawks lost in three to St. Lawrence and in four to Hunter (20-13).
St. Lawrence (23-11) avenged a 3-1 loss on its own court to the Hawks at the Canton Classic on September 26 in today's tournament opener. Final scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.
Hartwick managed a total of 19 kills in the match. Freshmen
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) and
Rosa Maun (Redstone, CO/Roaring Fork) had the team-high with five apiece. Senior
Christine Confer (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) added four.
Sophomore
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) had 16 assists and seven digs for the Hawks.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) recorded a team-best 14 digs. Baril and
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) each had seven.
The Saints also had a balanced attack with Masha Kolesnikova (7), Cristina Deschaine (6), and Becky Briggs (5) leading the way in kills. Mariah Dignan registered 10 digs and Jenna Street contributed 14 assists.
In their second match, the Hawks of Hunter took the opening set 25-16 before Hartwick drew even, edging its opponent 28-26. Hunter picked up sets number three (25-17) and four (25-18) to score the victory.
Baril and Armstrong each earned double-doubles to pace Hartwick. Both players had 10 kills with Armstrong securing a team-high 22 digs. Baril added 15 digs. Junior
Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) would also have 10 kills for 'Wick and Confer contributed offensively with six.
Zeitler accumulated 19 digs in the match with freshman
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) recording 16. Kinzel would tally 34 assists and eight digs.
Hartwick (8-21) will wrap up its regular season tomorrow with matches against Bard and Plattsburgh.
