Hartwick To Induct Five Into Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday

ONEONTA, NYHartwick College will induct former stars Jason Boltus '09, Jack Phelan '09, Tara Wilkes '04, Julie Landmann '04, and Ken Kutler into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 4.

The ceremony will take place in the Celebration Room of Shineman Chapel House at 5:30 p.m. during True Blue Weekend. The cost of the dinner is $60 per person, $15 per child under age 12. Advance registration for the event is required.

With the addition of this year's class, Hartwick will have inducted 136 former student-athletes, coaches, teams, and supporters into its Hall of Fame. It honors those who have made outstanding contributions to Hartwick's intercollegiate athletics programs. Its purpose is to perpetuate the memory of those who have brought distinction, honor, and excellence to Hartwick through their athletic accomplishments.

Ken Kutler







Ken Kutler spent 17 years as Hartwick's Director of Athletics and chairman of the Department of Physical Education from 1986 to 2003. In addition, he served as 'Wick's women's soccer coach for 10 seasons (1986-1993, 2001-02) and is the program's all-time leader in coaching victories with 103. Kutler piloted the program to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a pair of trips to the quarterfinal round. He also guided his teams to two ECAC Tournament berths, which included the 1992 ECAC title. Administratively at Hartwick, Kutler was a staunch advocate for athletic program expansion, gender equity, and improved facilities. Under his tutelage, Hartwick's Division I water polo program was created, as well as the equestrian, volleyball, and softball programs. Kutler spent a total of 35 years as an athletic director at three institutions. He arrived at Hartwick from Frostburg State, where he served as A.D. from 1978 to 1986 and the men's soccer coach for 17 years. Seven of his Bobcat teams made the NCAA Tournament and he was selected as the NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year on multiple occasions. Following 'Wick, Kutler spent 10 years as the director of athletics at Ithaca College from 2003 to 2013. During his tenure overseeing athletics at IC, the Bombers captured two NCAA Championships and six individual NCAA titles. Ithaca finished in the top 30 of the Learfield Directors' Cup and won the Empire 8 Commissioner's Cup every year. At the time of his induction, Kutler was also a member of the East Stroudsburg and the Frostburg State Halls of Fame.

Julie Landmann


Julie Landmann '04 earned both athletic and academic All-American honors with both the swimming and diving and water polo programs while at Hartwick. As a member of the swimming and diving team, Landmann earned All-American honors in the 100 backstroke as a junior (7th place), and received honorable mention All-American accolades as a sophomore (15th place) and senior (12th place) at the NCAA Division III Championships. In total, Landmann took first place in 95 events throughout her four-year career. She won three ECAC titles in her three years, was the ECAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet in 2004, and captured six NYSWCAA titles. She led the team in scoring her sophomore, junior, and senior year, earned Empire 8 Conference First Team honors nine times, and five second team awards. As a member of the Hartwick water polo team for four seasons, she amassed 10 goals 18 assists. Landmann was named an Academic All-American in swimming three times (2002-04) and water polo twice (2001-02). The NYSWCAA named her to its All-Academic Team three times (2002-04) with the AWPCA and CWPA naming her to their respective academic teams twice.

Tara Wilkes


Tara Wilkes '04 is one of the premier players in the history of Hartwick field hockey program, earning numerous athletic and academic awards throughout her four-year career. She registered 91 points on 36 goals and 19 assists and ranks seventh in points, eighth in goals, and tied for eighth in assists in the 'Wick record books at the time of her induction. After her junior season, Wilkes was named an STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American. She was also a three-time All-Region pick (2001-03), earning First Team honors after her junior and senior seasons, and a three-time NYSWCAA First Team selection. Wilkes was the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year and First Team All-Star in both 2002 and 2003 and played in the North/South Senior All-Star game. She helped her teams achieve 53 victories over her career and four postseason berths. Academically, Wilkes was a four-time NFHCA All-Academic Team honoree and a NYSWCAA Scholar Athlete. She received the Margaret Lunn Memorial Award, was twice a Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award winner, made the Dean's List as a freshman, and was named to the National Dean's List as a sophomore.

Jason Boltus




Jason Boltus '09 is one the most prolific offensive players in the history of college football. He led the country in both total offense and passing yards per game in each of his last two seasons with the Hawks. In his senior campaign, Boltus was first in the nation in points responsible for, second in total passing yards, and third in passing efficiency.  In both his junior and senior years, Boltus was a Gagliardi Trophy Finalist, the Empire 8 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, and the D3football.com East Region Offensive Player of the Year. He was selected as an Associated Press Little All-American and was tabbed both the ECAC Division III Player of the Year and the ECAC Northwest Player of the Year his senior season. He captured the 2007 Melberger Award, which was given to the top football player in Division III, and was a two-time Hartwick Roy Chipman Memorial Award winner for Male Athlete of the Year. Since his playing days at 'Wick, Boltus was invited to the National Football League's Scouting Combine and has played professionally in the Canadian Football League for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Arena Football League with the Utah Blaze, Spokane Shock, and Orlando Predators, and the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks. He recently signed with the AFL's Tampa Bay Storm for next season. Boltus is the all-time NCAA Division III leader in career yards with a total of 14,231. His career passing yardage (13,276) ranks 3rd in Division III history and his 134 career touchdown passes is 4th all-time.

Jack Phelan



Jack Phelan '09 is one of the most decorated Hartwick receivers in program history, earning recognition on four separate All-America teams in his final two seasons. Phelan was the national statistical champion in reception yards and reception yards per game in both his junior year and senior year. He was twice named an Empire 8 Conference First Team honoree, an ECAC Northwest All-Star, a D3football.com All-Region Player, and a D3football.com First Team All-American. His senior year, he was also an AFCA First Team and an Associated Press Second Team All-American after setting the NCAA Division III record for touchdown catches (26) in a season and touchdown receptions per game (2.6), which are records that still stand. He helped the Hawks to their first Empire 8 Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007, two straight postseason berths, and a record of 15-6 over his final two years. In 2011, Phelan was named to the D3football.com 2000s All-Decade Team. In the Hartwick record books, Phelan is the all-time leader in touchdown catches (50), is second in points scored (300), third in receiving yards (3,320) and sixth in receptions (146).
