ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick volleyball won its opening match in four sets and fell in its second in four in the opening day of competition at the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Invitational on Friday night at Lambros Arena.
The Hawks defeated SUNY Delhi in their first match. After dropping the first set, 22-25, Hartwick battled back to win the next three, 25-10, 25-13, 25-19 to improve to 6-13 on the year.
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) combined for 20 kills and 16 digs in the match. Armstrong registered 10 kills and nine digs to go along with six aces. Baril added 10 kills and seven digs.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) accumulated a match-high 21 digs with
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) contributing nine.
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) dished out 22 assists with
Jamie Reidy (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) adding 16.
In the Hawks' second match, they took an early lead on the favored Dutchwomen after winning the first set, 25-17. Union roared back in the second, 25-12, before outlasting the Hawks in the third set, 25-23. The Dutchwomen closed out the match, winning the fourth set, 25-15.
Baril, Armstrong, and
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) combined for 17 of the Hawks' 25 kills in the contest. Armstrong would add seven digs and six service aces. Zeitler had a team-high nine digs and Baril contributed six. Kinzel recorded 22 assists to go along with seven digs for 'Wick.
Hartwick hosts Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and The United States Coast Guard Academy tomorrow to conclude play at the tournament.
