ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick led in all three sets, but visiting SUNY Oneonta would come away with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams. Match scores were 22-25, 22-25, 23-25.
The Hawks would squander a big lead in the opening set. They held a 16-10 lead before a 10-4 Oneonta rally would tie the score at 20. The Red Dragons would then claim five of the next seven points to take the set.
After a 13-13 tie in set number two, Oneonta scored six of the next seven points to go up by a margin of 19-14. The Hawks pulled to within two, 24-22, but Oneonta got the decided point for a 2-0 advantage.
Oneonta trailed 13-8 early in the third set before roaring back once again. The Red Dragons jumped in front, 21-20, and got the next three points for a 24-20 lead. 'Wick trimmed the gap to just one after scoring the next three points. They had two attacks with a chance to even the score but couldn't cash in and the Red Dragons got the decisive point for the win.
Offensively for Hartwick, junior outside hitter
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) recorded a team-high nine kills. Sophomore
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) added six kills.
Baril would also contribute a team-best 16 digs on the night.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Chardon) would add 13 and
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) registered nine. Kinzel would also dish out 12 assists.
Jill Darpino paced Oneonta with seven kills. Kristen Polan recorded six. Karly Greco (14) and Jessica Pelaccio (13) combined for 27 assists.
The Hawks will partake in the Cortland Red Dragon Invitational this weekend. 'Wick plays Geneseo and St. Lawrence on Friday evening.
