CORTLAND, NY – Hartwick volleyball lost two matches on the opening day of competition at the Cortland Red Dragon Invitational on Friday night. The Hawks lost a three-set decision to Geneseo, 20-25, 16-25, 15-25, and dropped a four-setter to St. Lawrence, 14-25, 25-18, 24-26, 18-25.
Against Geneseo,
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) and
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) combined for 24 of the Hawks' 28 kills in the match. Baril led the team with 13. She also missed a double-double by just one dig, finishing with nine. Armstrong notched 11 kills for 'Wick. She added six digs.
Freshman
Jamie Reidy (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) produced her first collegiate double-double with team-highs of 19 assists and 11 digs.
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) contributed eight digs with
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Chardon) chipping in with seven.
In their second match, the Hawks battled back from a 1-0 deficit to take set number two, 25-18. The Saints narrowly edged out Hartwick in the third by a count of 26-24 and closed the match out in the fourth set, 25-18.
Baril tied for a team-best nine kills and added a team-high 14 digs. Armstrong was also in double figures in digs with 10.
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) dished out 19 assists in the match.
Rosa Maun (Redstone, CO/Roaring Fork) had nine kills and a hitting percentage of .350 for the contest. Zeitler recorded eight digs.
The Saints had four players with at least 10 kills. Becky Briggs accumulated 11 with Cristina Deschaine, Lexi Brown, and Masha Kolesnikova each adding 10. Katie Kull delivered 40 assists for St. Lawrence. Mariah Dignan and Kolesnikova each registered 16 digs.
Hartwick continues play in Cortland tomorrow. The Hawks play Wells at 1:30 p.m. and wrap up play against Buffalo State at 4 p.m.
