ROCHESTER, NY – Hartwick dropped its opening match but responded with a win in its second on Friday at the Nazareth College Golden Flyer Invitational in Rochester. The Hawks fell to unbeaten Brockport in their first match, 0-3 (20-25, 15-25, 11-25), but defeated Hilbert, 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-8), to salvage the split.
Brockport gained the upper hand in the early going of the Hawks' first match. 'Wick was able to get as close as four (19-15) after winning five straight points, but after a Golden Eagle timeout, they scored three straight points and went on to close out the set, 25-20.
In set number two with the score standings at 12-9 Brockport's favor, the Golden Eagles out-scored the Hawks 13-6 to score a 25-15 win.
Brockport secured the victory in the third after rattling off 11 of the final 12 points of the set. The Hawks had trailed by just four, 14-10, up until that point.
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) had a team-high eight kills and five digs.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Chardon) and
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) each tied for a team-best with 11 digs.
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) added eight digs and four kills.
Rachel Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) notched five kills and
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) delivered 17 assists.
Sam Holdridge (12) and Kayla Barber (11) each were in double figures in kills for the Golden Eagles.
Against the Hilbert Hawks, Hartwick led by a count of 11-8 before using a nine-point rally to pull away in the first set. 'Wick had a tougher time in the second set. In the late stages, Hilbert was able to trim its deficit to a single point, 19-18. Hartwick would claim four of the next five points and won the set 25-20 on a
Jamie Reidy (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) kills.
Hartwick led 8-6 in the third set before erupting for 13 of the final 15 points to sweep Hilbert three sets to zero.
Baril (8), Jones (6), and Armstrong (4) led the Hawks with a combined 18 kills. Armstrong would contribute a team-high 12 digs.
Ashley Smatko (Fort Edward, NY/South Glens Falls) added 10 digs with Reidy and
Rachel Griffing (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) chipping in nine apiece. Baril would record seven digs.
Morgan Ott led Hilbert in kills with six. Ashley Viengmay registered a game-high 18 digs.
Hartwick plays Vassar and RIT tomorrow to wrap competition at the tournament.
