OSWEGO, NY – The Hartwick Hawks split their final two matches at the Oswego Invitational on Saturday, falling in four sets to Oswego, 15-25, 9-25, 26-24, 25-27, and defeating the D'Youville Spartans in three, 25-15, 25-14, 25-18.
Against Oswego in the opening set, the Hawks trailed by just two, 14-12, but an 11-3 Laker run closed out a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Hawks fell behind early and never recuperated as the hosts took a 2-0 advantage.
In the third set, the Hawks fell behind 15-10 but rallied to even the match 23-23. A kill from
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) secured the set and cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
In the fourth, the Hawks led for virtually the entire set and were one point from evening the match at two, 24-19. But the Lakers scored eight of the final nine points to take the match, 3-1.
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) and
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) each recorded double-doubles in the match. Baril registered a match-high 17 kills to go along with 14 digs. Kinzel notched a match-high 30 assists with 13 digs.
Armstrong finished with 10 kills and seven digs.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) had 14 digs and
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) contributed 11.
Hartwick responded in convincing fashion in its second match, winning in straight sets. Baril, who was selected to the All-Tournament Team, ended the contest with a match-high nine kills.
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) added seven with Armstrong recording six.
Kinzel would pick up 18 assists in the match. Werner added another 11 digs.
The Hawks are back in action mon Tuesday at Lambros Arena. 'Wick hosts SUNY Cobleskill at 7 p.m.
