ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's women's soccer team scored early and then netted three goals in a 14-minute second-half span to earn a 4-0 shutout victory over visiting Wells College on Wednesday night on Elmore Field.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard 4:43 into the contest as sophomore
Allie Ricci (Millstone, NJ/Saint John Vianney) delivered a pass 35 yards from goal to
Cami Cleaveland (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) who had loads of space at the top of the box. She put the ball away with her left foot, driving her shot past the on-rushing Wells keeper, Quinn Doubet, for a 1-0 lead.
It would be all the scoring for the next 62 minutes of play. The Hawks, however, had several chances to score addition goals.
With just over 18 minutes left in the first half, sophomore
Ashley Connolly (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) broke into the box and moved around the goalkeeper putting herself in position to tuck the ball into an open net, but Wells defender Arianna Harmon cleared the ball away before Connolly could pull the trigger.
Just under six minutes later, Hartwick thought they had scored their second of the night. Freshman
Taylor Lockwood (Schenectady, NY/The Albany Academies) ripped a shot off the crossbar that Connolly put into an open net on the rebound but she was flagged for offside.
The Express held off the Hawks for almost 22 minutes of the second half. Finally in the 67
th minute, 'Wick added to its total.
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) slipped a short pass in the box to Connolly who finished to the far post past Doubet for a two-goal advantage.
Five minutes and 11 seconds later, Ricci earned her second assist of the day. She touched a pass to
Maddy Paul (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) who fired home the Hawks' third goal of the match.
Freshman
Emily Lewandusky (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) punched home a rebound in the 81
st minute for her first collegiate goal and the Hawks' final tally of the evening.
Hartwick held a 26-1 advantage in shots. Starting goalkeeper
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) played the opening 80 minutes. Freshman
Kristen Altieri (Babylon, NY/Babylon) played the final 10 minutes. Neither was called upon to make save. Doubet finished with four stops for Wells.
Hartwick next plays on Saturday in the Mayor's Cup. 'Wick hosts St. Joseph's (LI) on Elmore beginning at 3:30 p.m.
