ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick Hawks out-shot visiting SUNY Canton 35-1 in a one-sided affair on Tuesday night at Elmore Field. 'Wick scored early then had a difficult time punching a second past Kangaroo keeper Allison Wakefield before three second-half tallies put the game away.
The Hawks are unbeaten in their last three matches and improve to 6-3-1. The Kangaroos fall to 3-8-1 overall.
Hartwick got all the offense it would need 5:52 into the match when
Allie Ricci (Millstone, NJ/Saint John Vianney) served a ball in from the left side of Canton's goal searching for the head of
Rachel Weir (New Milford, CT/New Milford). The ball traveled past her and Wakefield, who tried to make a play on the ball, right to
Rachel Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) who finished into an open net for a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks had a sizeable advantage in shots for the half, 17-1, but settled for a one-goal advantage at the break.
Hartwick would use three goals in an 11:24 span early in the second half. Ricci scored the Hawks' second goal at 50:15 as she took a pass from
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) and got past a trio of Kangaroo defenders and drove a shot high into the goal for her third tally of the season.
Just 3:01 later,
Casey Boucher (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) pounced on a loose ball and had time to fire past Wakefield for her second goal of the campaign.
Jacqueline Smith (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) closed out the scoring at 61:39 as she sent in a shot from distance on goal. The ball went through Wakefield's hands and in for Smith's first goal in a Hartwick uniform.
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) would be called upon to make one save in the game to get the clean sheet in goal. Wakefield finished the match with 15 saves for Canton.
Hartwick gets back to Empire 8 action this weekend with a pair of big matches. The Hawks travel to St. John Fisher Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest. They visit Nazareth Sunday at 1 p.m.
