Volleyball Sweeps Norwich in Season Debut, Falls to Eastern Connecticut State

MORRISVILLE, NY – The Hartwick women's volleyball team picked up a win to begin its 2016 slate at the Morrisville Tournament on Saturday. In a 3-0 sweep, the Hawks defeated Norwich University by the scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-7. The Hawks fell to 1-1 after falling in their second match to Eastern Connecticut State, 20-25, 23-25, 20-25.

In the opening match, senior Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) led the charge with a team-high nine kills, five of which came in the opening set. The Cadets fell behind early and down 15-6, the team called for time. Out of the break, Armstrong would connect on back-to-back kills to assist the Hawks on an 8-4 run. Norwich attempted to combat that momentum winning the next four points (18-10) but it would be a 7-2 run that would ultimately hand the set over to the Hawks.

In the second set, Hartwick earned an immediate 7-2 lead and forced the Mustangs into a timeout. Out of the intermission, the Cadets' Michele Zummo landed a kill and a Hartwick error would diffuse the margin to only three, 7-4. However, an Erin Formosa (Waterford, NY/Waterford Halfmoon) kill from sophomore Jamie Reidy (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) would quickly snap that rally. Reidy would finish the game with 12 assists.

Hartwick would go on to benefit from several Norwich errors and service aces to bring the score to 15-7. For the second half of the set, Hartwick continued to hold the advantage and with three consecutive points, they would end the second set 25-15.

The third set began much like the second with Hartwick earning another early 7-2 advantage. The Hawks registered their longest point streak of 9-0 to bring the score to 18-4. Hartwick would close the set winning seven of the last eleven points to secure the sweep.

Hartwick suffered a 3-0 loss in its second game of the day to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State. Reidy led all players in assists with 18 and registered a team-high 13 digs.

Senior Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) and junior Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) each added 12 digs for the Hawks. The Warriors were led by Michelle Valliere's 14 digs and also benefitted with an additional nine from Adrianna Mihalek.

Armstrong has led the Hawks in kills in both matches today including landing 11 of Hartwick's 22 in the setback. Mihalek led the game in kills with 12 for the opposition.

The Warriors' Leah Sopneski harvested 17 assists, one short of Reidy's game-high mark. Overall, Eastern Connecticut State topped Hartwick in the category with a total of 34 to Hartwick's 20.

The Hawks return to the court in day two of the Morrisville Tournament to battle two more opponents, Kean University at 1 p.m. and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 5 p.m. Kean has swept each of its opponents in the tournament and is undefeated on the year. MCLA enters tomorrow's matches having gone 0-2 in its matchups today.
