MORRISVILLE, NY – The Hartwick volleyball team entered day two of the two-day Morrisville Tournament on Sunday. In order to add to the win column, the Hawks would have to get by an undefeated opponent in Kean University.
In its first match of the final day of competition, Hartwick and Kean battled to a five-set thriller.
Kean claimed a sizeable lead in the first set and would ultimately run away with it, 25-11. Hartwick would answer with a second set win, 25-17 to even things back up.
The two teams battled closely in the third display. But Kean went up on the afternoon 2-1 with a 28-26 win.
Hartwick produced a .344 hitting clip in the fourth to earn the set victory 25-22. Kean tallied a .148 hitting mark.
In the deciding fifth set, Kean outscored the Hawks 15-9 and would remain unbeaten.
In the final match of the tournament, the Hawks battled the Trailblazers of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Hartwick faced another five-set thriller but this time it was the victory recipient.
The Hawks claimed the first set, 25-21 but fell 25-22 in the second.
'Wick won the third set 25-20 but allowed MCLA to take the fourth, 25-23.
The final set remained close but by an eventual four-point advantage, the Hawks edged the Traiblazers to even out their season mark, 2-2. MCLA falls to 1-4 on the year.
Senior
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) landed a game-high 17 kills in the first contest. Junior
Nicole Wyse (Manchester, CT/South Windsor) (13) and freshman
Kaitlyn Ludder (Wantagh, NY/Seaford) (9) also contributed kills against Kean.
Sophomore
Jamie Reidy (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) snagged a game-high 42 assists to compliment 16 digs in the first meeting and a game-high 41 assists in the second. Reidy has now accumulated 113 assists for the season.
Senior
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) led the team with 24 digs while Armstrong also added 21 versus Kean.
Armstrong gathered another 16 kills against MCLA bringing her tournament total to 53. The senior has credited 63 points in the four-game span to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team as the only 'Wick representative.
Next, Hartwick will play SUNY Cobleskill on the road September 7
th. On September 9
th, the Hawks will compete for the first time this season at Lambros Arena. They host King's College and SUNY Delhi.
