ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick volleyball fought back from a 2-0 deficit and had two match points in the fifth set, but visiting SUNY Poly registered the final four points to top the Hawks 3-2 on Wednesday night at Lambros Arena. The game served as Hartwick Senior Night with a ceremony honoring the program's four seniors prior to the match.
The Hawks, who were playing in their third fifth-setter in a row, dropped the opening two sets 25-23 and 25-21 to hand the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Hartwick won set number three 25-18 and they matched the score in the fourth to even the match at two sets apiece.
In the deciding set, the Hawks held the lead for virtually the whole way, eventually building a 14-12 edge. But the Wildcats rallied for four straight to escape Lambros with the victory.
Rosa Maun (Redstone, CO/Roaring Fork) led the Hawks with 16 kills.
Maria Sorriento (Troy, NY/Troy) chipped in with 12.
Kaitlyn Ludder (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) and
Nicole Wyse (Manchester, CT/South Windsor) contributed seven and five, respectively.
Jamie Reidy (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) paced the Hawks with 20 digs.
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) added 14.
Erin Russell (Wantagh, NY/Seaford) registered a double-double with 13 digs and 32 assists.
Rachel Griffing (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) also had 13 digs and
Katie Boak (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had 12. Boak also recorded four service aces.
Brittany Adams had a team-high 12 kills for the Wildcats. Makayla Hulett (9), Karlie King (8), and Megan Will (8) also added to the SUNY Poly offense. Kayla Pichura and Adams had the team-high in digs with 14 each.
Maun, Wyse, Werner, and Griffing were recognized before the match for their contributions to the Hartwick volleyball program.
Hartwick (10-10) next plays on Friday, October 13 at Scranton. First serve is 3 p.m.
