ONEONTA, NY – Shots were hard to come by on the day, but the Hartwick women's soccer team put away a couple on Friday as the Hawks defeated Western New England 2-0 on Elmore Field in the first round of the 14
th annual Brozman Cup.
The Hawks play tomorrow against Keuka, which was a 1-0 overtime winner over Utica today, for the cup title.
Hartwick started quickly as it opened the scoring less than nine minutes into the contest. Hartwick career assist leader
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) added another one as she sent a short pass into the box which allowed
Rachel Weir (New Milford, CT/New Milford) a look at goal. Weir collected the ball and beat Golden Bears' keeper Alex Lemekha low to the far post for a 1-0 advantage.
It took nearly 54 minutes for the Hawks to cash in on an insurance marker.
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) beat Lemekha to the ball, heading in
Kiley Richardson's (Flanders, NJ/Roxbury) long service into the box and the 'Wick lead was two with 28 minutes remaining.
Hartwick finished the game with a 7-2 advantage in shots. The second half produced just two shots for both sides, which included Miller's tally. The Hawks took three of the game's four corners in the match.
Celeste Trevellini (Bayside, NY/World Journalism) and
Cassandra Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) split time in goal. Trevellini made two saves in the opening 45 minutes. Robataille was not called upon to make a stop in the second 45 minutes. Lemekha made three saves for WNE.
The Hawks will be in search of their fourth consecutive Brozman Cup tomorrow. Kickoff from Elmore is 4 p.m.
