SUNY Oneonta Tops Volleyball in Three

Recap: SUNY Oneonta handed the Hartwick volleyball team a loss in the opening match of the SUNY Oneonta Dig Pink Invitational in Dewar Arena Friday evening. The Red Dragons won by scores of 25-17, 30-28, and 25-21. In the first set, the hosts opened up a big lead jumping out to an 11-poiit advantage at one point. They would close out the set on a Victoria Moulder kill. The second set was tight throughout with neither team opening up more than a two-point lead until Oneonta grabbed a 17-14 edge. Hartwick trailed 19-16 but rallied with five straight points for a 21-19 lead. The Hawks held a 24-22 advantage and were one point from evening the match, but two straight Red Dragons points tied the score again. Oneonta would register four set points that the Hawks would fight off until they converted for a 30-28 win. In the third set, Oneonta earned a 14-13 lead that it never relinquished. Seven straight Red Dragon points would lead to a 21-14 edge. The Hawks won four of the next six points to trim the gap but Oneonta ended the match with a kill from Gillian Stieglitz. Myla Dobson (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) had the team-high in kills with nine. Maria Sorriento (Troy, NY/Troy) and Kiera Walsh (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) each had six with Celia Gagnon (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane) contributing five. Katie Boak (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) recorded 14 digs to lead the Hawks defensively. Sorriento added 10 for a double-double in the contest. Jamie Reidy (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) contributed 24 assists and eight digs for the Hawks.
 
Up Next: Hartwick plays Baruch and St. Lawrence at 12 and 4 p.m., respectively, tomorrow to wrap up its regular season.
