Men’s Lax Wins First, 5-3, at Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, NY – Hartwick took a low-scoring game at Farmingdale State with a 5-3 road victory over the Rams on Saturday. 'Wick held the Rams scoreless in the opening half while building a 3-0 advantage. The Hawks would lead 5-1 in the fourth quarter before the Rams netted a pair of late tallies.
           
With the win, Hartwick improves to 1-1 on the season. Farmingdale drops to 2-3.
           
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) scored two goals and delivered an assist to pace the Hawks' attack. Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) added a goal and an assist. Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) and Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) also found the net for the Hawks.
           
Long and Maguire would connect for the only goal of the first quarter, a man-up tally at the 7:57 mark. The Hawks extended their lead when Maguire scored off an Armstrong feed 3:55 into the second quarter. They added a third 4:14 before halftime as VanDemark tallied from a David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) assist.
           
Hartwick made it 4-0 nearly 10 minutes into the third quarter as Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) setup Armstrong. Twelve seconds later, the Rams finally broke through goalkeeper C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) for their first goal of the game and the Hawks took a 4-1 lead into the final quarter.
           
In the fourth, Armstrong scored a man-up goal just over five minutes in for a four-goal advantage. Farmingdale scored at the 7:01 mark to inch closer. The final goal of the game came from the Rams with just 1:40 left to play.
           
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) would register a game-high 10 ground balls in the game. Ferguson and Long each had three. Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) caused three Rams' turnovers. VanDemark caused a pair of miscues. Alesandrini finished with nine saves and only three goals against in 60 minutes in cage for 'Wick. David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) won 8-of-12 face-offs.
           
Farmingdale ended the match with a slim 28-27 edge in shots. The Hawks had the advantage in ground balls, 29-25.
           
Hartwick will play in its home opener on Saturday, March 17 against SUNY Potsdam beginning at 1 p.m.
