ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick men's lacrosse topped visiting SUNY Potsdam 11-3 on Saturday at Wright Stadium to move to 2-1 on the season. The Hawks have now surrendered just three goals in consecutive games. It marks the fewest goals allowed by the Hawks in two straight contests since 2004.
Hartwick doubled up the Bears in shots, 44-22. They also had a 34-24 advantage in ground balls.
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson),
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), and
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) all recorded at least four points on the day. Maguire scored three goals and dished out three assists. Ferguson tallied twice and added three helpers. Demand scored a trio of goals and added an assist.
Mike Majchrzak (Plantsville, CT/Southington) contributed a goal and an assist.
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and
Justin Curreri (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) also scored for 'Wick.
Hartwick grabbed the lead near the midway point of the first quarter before the Bears netted two straight goals for a 2-1 lead with 11:25 left in the second quarter. It would mark the Bears' final goal for over 25 minutes as the Hawks' defense shut them down until under a minute remained in the third quarter. In the meantime, the Hawks would score seven unanswered goals and they led by an 8-2 margin. In the final quarter, the Hawks tacked on three more goals for the final 11-3 score line.
'Wick would cause 13 turnovers in the game, led by
Eric Schweitzer's (Babylon, NY/Babylon) four.
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) and
Alec Lind (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) each recorded two.
Schweitzer also led all players with eight ground balls.
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) added five and Wojtas,
Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford), and
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) chipped in three apiece.
Goalie
C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) made six saves in cage for the Hawks. Potsdam keeper Zach Sheridan finished the game with 18 stops.
Hartwick opens Empire 8 Conference play next Saturday at home against St. John Fisher. The opening face-off is slated for 2 p.m.
