Men’s Lax Rallies for 6-5 Win Over St. John Fisher to Open Up Empire 8 Conference Play

ONEONTA, NYCordell Armstrong's (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) second goal of the game with 4:34 left in the fourth quarter capped a four-goal run for Hartwick men's lacrosse in a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over St. John Fisher Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks improve to 3-1 on the season and the have won three in a row. The Cardinals fall to 5-3 overall.
           
Armstrong led all players with his two goals. David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) added a goal and he assisted on the Hawks' final two goals of the contest. Tim Watson (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) contributed a goal and an assist. Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) and Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) also tallied.
           
The game was scoreless through the opening 12 minutes of the game until Fisher broke the ice with 2:53 left in the first quarter. Watson answered for the Hawks with six ticks left to tie up the score. A Maguire goal from Watson 43 seconds into the second quarter gave the lead to Hartwick, but Fisher scored three straight times to jump ahead 4-2 at the half.
           
The Cardinals added their fifth goal 1:08 into the third quarter and they led by a count of 5-2. It would, however, mark their final goal as the Hawks blanked them over the final 28:52 of action. Armstrong scored his first of the day at 5:37 of the third quarter. Demand then tallied from Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) 2:08 later to trim the gap to one, 5-4.
           
Demand set up Long, who tied the score, with 11:22 remaining in the game. Armstrong put the Hawks ahead for good at 4:34 off a feed from Demand. Fisher had three shots over the final 4:05 but only one was on target. C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie), who entered the game leading the nation in both goals against average and save percentage, made his sixth and final save on the shot to help preserve the victory.
           
The two teams finished the game even in shots, 25-25. The Cardinals held a slim edge in ground balls, 30-26, and they won 12-of-14 face-offs.
           
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) caused a game-high three turnovers for 'Wick. Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) caused two turnovers and he grabbed a team-best four ground balls. Long and Demand each recorded three ground balls.
           
Chance Gates and Nicholas Miller each had a goal and an assist for Fisher. Joe Post won 12 face-offs and grabbed a game-high 10 ground balls.
           
Hartwick hosts SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
