ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick scored the game's last three goals over the final 17:34 of action to rally for an 8-6 victory over city-rival Oneonta State on Wednesday at Wright Stadium. The game featured four lead changes and six tie scores. The win for Hartwick ups its season record to 4-1. It marks the first time the Hawks have begun a season 4-1 since 2005. Oneonta State falls to 3-4 overall.
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) scored a game-high four goals and added an assist for 'Wick.
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) scored twice and
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) dished out a game-best five assists.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) had game highs in both ground balls (8) and caused turnovers (4).
Both teams registered a pair of goals in the first quarter before the Red Dragons took a 3-2 lead 2:28 into the second quarter. The game remained 3-2 for nearly 10 minutes until Long scored with 2:20 left in the half. Ferguson gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead with 18 ticks left. Maguire assisted on both tallies.
Hartwick extended its lead 3:55 into the third quarter as Long found the net off a
Justin Curreri (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) feed. Oneonta responded with three straight goals 4:40 apart to grab a 6-5 advantage.
Maguire set up Ferguson with 2:34 left in the third and again 1:41 into the final quarter to put the Hawks up to stay.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) put the game away with 34 seconds to go with Ferguson assisting.
The Hawks out-shot the Red Dragons by a margin of 28-25. Oneonta had the edge in ground balls, 29-26, and face-off, 10-8.
Nick Couvaris (Seaford, NY/Seaford) contributed four ground balls for the Hawks.
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango),
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge), and goalkeeper
C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) each had three. Alesandrini also stopped seven shots in cage.
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) won all eight of 'Wick's face-offs.
Six different players registered goals for the Red Dragons. Troy Stasko recorded five ground balls and won 10 face-offs. Keeper Zachary Flynn made 12 saves in goal.
Hartwick next plays in an Empire 8 Conference game at Alfred University on Saturday, March 31. The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
