HOBOKEN, NJ – 'Wick's men's lacrosse team was defeated by nationally fourteenth ranked Stevens Institute of Technology 11-5 at DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ on Saturday. Hartwick is now 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8 Conference. Stevens is 11-2 and 4-0.
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) scored a pair of goals for the Hawks.
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) added a goal and an assist.
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and
Brett Maguire (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) each recorded goals.
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) notched an assist.
Stevens built a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Ducks scored four times in the opening 6:28 for a 4-0 advantage and added a fifth for a 5-0 lead after one quarter. Two goals in the first 1:53 of the second grew the margin to seven.
Maguire, Ferguson, and Armstrong would register three straight tallies in a 5:28 span of the second quarter as the Hawks trimmed the gap to four, 7-3, at halftime. After the Ducks found the net 32 seconds into the third quarter, VanDemark and Ferguson tallied 14 seconds apart to narrow the gap to just three, 8-5.
Hartwick would fire six more shots over the next nine minutes but couldn't inch closer to a two-goal deficit. Stevens rallied for three straight goals in the last 3:11 of the quarter to pull away. Both teams registered nine shots in the final quarter but none would find the net.
The Ducks held a 41-30 edge in shots in the game. The Hawks had more ground balls, 26-25, and Stevens won 13 face-offs to the Hartwick's seven.
Wojtas finished the game with highs of nine ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) added seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) won seven face-offs and goalie
C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) made 15 saves in goal.
Eric Radbourne scored three goals to lead Stevens. Brendan Monteleone and John Boutureira each tallied twice. Max Bailey scored a goal and dished out four assists.
Hartwick will host Utica College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a Code Blue match.
