ONEONTA, NY – Host St. John Fisher out-scored Hartwick 8-0 in the second quarter to break open the game in a 25-12 loss for the Hawks Saturday in Pittsford. The Hawks, who entered the game winners of eight straight games, fall to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8. The Cardinals improve to 12-1 and 5-0 in league play with the victory.
The two teams traded goals to start the game with Jordan Depetres opening the scoring for Fisher at 11:48 and
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) evening the score with a goal 41 seconds later. The Cardinals scored the next three goals in a 2:13 window to jump in front 4-1.
Alec Lind (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) then tallied for 'Wick with
Kainen Francis-Thompson (Hogansburg, NY/Massena) assisting to make it a 4-2 game. Fisher came back with a fifth tally before
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) found
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) with 1:12 left in the quarter to close the gap to two, 5-3.
The second quarter was all Fisher as it rattled off eight straight goals. Nicholas Miller, Zack Wagner, and Jack Mulvihill each netted a pair of goals for the Cardinals in the run. Tucker O'Donnell and Tommy Farry also tallied and the hosts entered halftime up 13-3.
The hosts netted another eight goals in the third quarter. After an early Fisher tally,
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) responded with a pair of goals.
Dylan Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) provided assists. The Cardinals would go on a five-goal run over a 2:38 span for a 19-5 advantage. The two teams traded goals over the final 3:12 of the quarter with Francis-Thompson and Lind providing the Hartwick goals and Fisher entered the final quarter up fourteen, 21-7.
Mike Majchrzak (Plantville, CT/Southington) scored for the Hawks to start the fourth, but another four-goal rally for Fisher in a 2:44 span put them up 25-8. 'Wick closed the game with four straight goals from Demand, Lind, and a pair from Francis-Thompson.
The Cardinals finished the contest with a 52-27 advantage in shots and a 51-27 edge in ground balls. They also controlled the face-off circle throughout the day, winning 35 of 40.
Miller led Fisher with six goals and three assists. Mulvihill scored four goals and added one helper. Joe Post dropped just one face-off all day, winning 31-of-32 in the game. He also grabbed 27 ground balls.
Francis-Thompson paced Hartwick with three goals and two assists. Demand and Lind each totaled three goals. Wojtas led the Hawks with seven ground balls. He also caused a game-high five turnovers. Francis-Thompson contributed four ground balls.
Andrew Wright (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) chipped in three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
C.J. Alesandrini (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) made 10 saves in the opening 30 minutes of the game for Hartwick.
Jared Tiong-Smith (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) stopped eight shots in the final two quarters. Darin Eakins made 10 saves in the Cardinal cage.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, April 17 when they travel to Utica College to play the Pioneers at 4 p.m.
