On This Day (11/5/95): Field Hockey Wins ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship

On this day in 1995 the Hartwick field hockey team beat Drew University in overtime, 3-2, to claim the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship.

Second-seeded Drew broke the ice first with 16:26 left in the first half, as Alicia Gregson crossed one from the right corner to Alison Goeke, who beat the keeper for the opening goal.

It took until there were under 24 minutes left in regulation for 'Wick to tie the game, as future Tournament MVP Erin Ross drove one home from the top of the circle. Drew retook the lead with 10:45 left however, when Gregson and Goeke connected again off a corner.

Under a minute-and-a-half later, Ross converted once again off a corner, as she took passes from Shelley Smith and Sarah Englebert and ripped one into the right side of the cage.

The title winner came 5:32 into overtime. Ross sent a shot from 10 yards out on the right flank, which deflected off the pads of the goalkeeper. Freshman Jen Smith (#21, third row) gathered the ball on the left side and fired to the back post for the trophy.

"This was a great game," said head coach Anna Meyer. "It was very exciting... I wasn't sure what to expect when we went to overtime, but I thought that individually we had more talented players, and it played out that way in the overtime."
