ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick women's swimming and diving team fought hard in their first meet of the 2021-2022 season (the program's first against outside competition in over 600 days), but ultimately placed fifth out of five teams with 64 points on Saturday at the 15th annual Hartwick Relays in Moyer Pool. Brandeis University came out victorious with 126 points, followed by Le Moyne at 98, the College of St. Rose at 90, and SUNY Oneonta in fourth with 86.
'Wick came in second in two events. The breaststrokers kicked it off in the 3x100, taking second to Brandeis. Jacqueline Drown (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge), Paige Eaton (East Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy), and Emma Reilly (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) came in second by four seconds, only behind Brandeis by two. Next up was the mixed 200 medley relay, where the men and women's teams came together to win second with Avyanna Chavez-Rodriguez (Rio Rancho, NM/Pecos Connections Academy), Sebastian Knowles (Plano, TX/Plano West Senior) and Diallo Marshall (Saint George, Antigua & Barbuda/St. Anthony's) of the men's team for breaststroke and butterfly respectively, anchored by Eaton.
The Hawks came in third in three events, starting with the 3x100 backstroke relay. Chavez-Rodriguez, Bree Dy (Matawan, NJ/Bishop George Ahr), and Elizabeth Baird (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs), all freshman, came in third, beating SUNY Oneonta to the wall. The Hawks took the bronze in the 3x100 fly relay, led by Chavez-Rodriguez and anchored by Meghan Geczy (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) and Abby Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), beating Le Moyne by a second. They finished the meet with a third place result in the 800 medley relay, composed of Baird, Reilly, Miller, and Joelle Ocheltree (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville).
The Hawks are back at it next week when they host the Cazenovia, College of St. Rose, SUNY Delhi, and Utica for a quint meet. Diving begins at 9 a.m., with swimming at 1 p.m..
