ONEONTA, NY – Another game, another 1-1 double-overtime draw. The Hartwick women's soccer team was all square with Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, drawing the Nittany Lions 1-1 in the opener of the 45th Oneonta Mayor's Cup. The tie keeps the Hawks undefeated through four games, at 2-0-2, while Penn State Harrisburg remains winless at 0-1-2.
The Nittany Lions opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a Rhyan Socash breakaway tally. Sarah Calkins intercepted a poor Hartwick pass and sent one over the top to Socash, who held off a Hawks defender and slipped it on by Sara Staup (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville) into the net.
A few shots and a couple corners later, 'Wick had their goal. Gianna Cacciola (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River) won a battle against a defender along the right side of the box and then crossed one towards the netfront. The ball took a deflection off a Nittany Lion back and came right to the feet of Madi McGuire (Goshen, NY/Goshen), who potted it in the left side of the net for the 40th minute equalizer.
That would turn out to be all the scoring for the day. Hartwick heavily outshot their visitors in the second half and the two overtime periods at a combined 12-1 clip but could not find their winner.
Julia Collado (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Huntedon) led all players with four shots, while Grace Byrne (Lynbrook, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) was not far behind at three tries towards goal. Staup played all 90 minutes in net, making one save.
The Hawks dominated the shot count, leading 16-2 overall and 7 to 2 in shots on target. They also earned significantly more corners than the Nittany Lions, at 13 to 3.
'Wick is back at it tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a chance at a Mayor's Cup title, as they will take on a tough Roanoke team on the Elmore grass.
