Roanoke Sails By Women’s Soccer in Mayor’s Cup Finale

ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick women's soccer team ran into a buzzsaw on Sunday afternoon, falling to Roanoke College by a 6-0 scoreline on the second day of the 45th Oneonta Mayor's Cup. The win gave the Maroons a perfect six points for the tournament and the Cup title, as well as boosted them to 5-0 on the season. The Hawks drop to 2-1-2 on the year.

Roanoke got the scoring started early and continued to tally throughout, scoring first in the eighth minute. After a Maroon was taken down in the box, Emma Woods stepped up to the penalty spot and hit one into the right side of the goal for the early lead. Woods assisted on the next tally in the 12th minute, sending a free kick from about 40 yards out to an unmarked MC Petrucelli for the easy tap-in goal. The half's final tally came from Morgan O'Neill in the 39th minute, who was played in by Erin Flamm's ball over the top before she beat Sara Staup (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville) to the far left post.

O'Neill scored again on the 53rd minute, as she was again the beneficiary of some nifty passing before beating the keeper on a tough angle. Tessa McMillan made it five in the 76th minute, jumping on a loose ball in the box for the tap in. Lily Pawliczak finished off the day's scoring in the 88th minute, stealing the ball from a Hartwick player, charging, and beating Staup left-footed to the right side of the net.

Shots were even in the first half at four all, but the Maroons turned up the heat in the second to the tune of a 9-2 margin. Corners were even on the day at three all.

Roanoke's O'Neill was named the Tournament's Offensive MVP, while Flamm picked up Defensive MVP honors. Woods and Yeager also earned All-Tournament nods. For the Hawks, Lexie Thompson (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) and Madi McGuire (Goshen, NY/Goshen) were named to the All-Tournament team.

'Wick will try and shake it off next Saturday, when they travel to Keuka for their Empire 8 opener at 1 p.m.
