Hartwick Tripped Up in E8 Opener, Fall to Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – The Hawks could not find an answer to the balanced Pioneer attack on Saturday afternoon, dropping their Empire 8 opener, 57-7.

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 7, Utica 57
  • Location:  Utica, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (2-2, 0-1 Empire 8), Utica (5-0, 1-0 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Utica jumped on the board first after a 9-play 77-yard drive with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Hawks responded two possessions later as Kyle Szokoli (Greenlawn, N.Y.) hit Nate Rath (Newport, N.Y.) for a 91-yard completion with just under two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Unfortunately for Hartwick, their offense would sputter from there as Utica either forced a Hartwick turnover, or forced the Hawks to punt over their next ten possessions.
  • Meanwhile after the Hawks' TD, the Pioneers would go on to score in some fashion on eight of their 10 possessions.
  • Defensively, the Hawks forced the Pioneers into a turnover by way of an Owen Lawler (Enfield, Conn.) interception late in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough to swing the momentum back their way.
  • Bryan Grimes (Albany, N.Y.) finished the afternoon with nine solo tackles and nine assisted tackles.  Jeremy Gerdvil (East Northport, N.Y.) picked up a sack for a loss of nine yards as one of his three solo tackles.
  • Offensively, the Hawks went through the air. Szokoli ended the day with 270 yards on 20 completions.  Rath was the beneficiary of most of those yards as the junior finished with 153 yards on four receptions.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks continue Empire 8 play next Saturday, October 8 with a 1 PM kickoff at home against the Alfred University Saxons.  For the team's "Code Blue" game, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee is calling for a "white out."
