  • Final Score:  Hartwick 6, Alfred 21

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Saxons won the toss and elected to receive in the first half.
  • After roughly a four-minute Alfred drive, the Hawks forced a turnover on downs, taking possession of the ball at the 10:24 mark in the 1st quarter.
  • The drive would ultimately result in a punt, but a Saxon fumble on the return would give the ball back to the Hawks.
  • While not finding the endzone, Hartwick was able to get on the board with their second chance via a 38-yard field goal by Nick Andrade (Shelton, Conn.).
  • Alfred would run their next possession from the 4:33 mark in the 1st quarter to the 13:39 mark in the 2nd quarter.  The drive was capped off with a Max Freeman IV rushing touchdown to give the Saxons the 7-3 advantage.
  • On the ensuing kickoff, the Hawks fumbled the return and the Saxons regained control.
  • However, Nelon Priest (Schenectady, N.Y.) picked off an Alfred pass in the Hartwick endzone for a touchback to end the Saxons threat.
  • The Hawks offense continued to get opportunities from their defense and special teams throughout the 2nd quarter.
  • After a 5-plus minute drive from Alfred, Richie Mercurio (Smithtown, N.Y.) blocked and recovered an Alfred field goal attempt.
  • After a Hartwick three-and-out, Priest would again get the ball back into the hands of his offense after another pick and return.
  • The late 2nd quarter drive for the Hawks would ultimately end with another field goal from Andrade, putting Hartwick within one going into halftime.
  • Alfred and Hartwick traded possessions throughout the 3rd quarter as neither defense would allow the opposing offense to get anything going.
  • The Saxons eventually broke through carrying their drive from the end of the 3rd into the 4th with a three-yard completion at the 13:45 mark to take the 14-6 lead.
  • Just nineteen seconds later, the Saxons intercepted a pass, returning it 32 yards for a touchdown, making the score 21-6.
  • Unfortunately for the Hawks, their remaining drives would not end in a score and the 21-6 score would stand.
  • Nate Rath (Newport, N.Y.) picked up 95 yards on seven receptions as the quarterbacking tandem of Kyle Szokoli (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Jason Garcia (Yonkers, N.Y.) threw for 168 combined yards.
  • Defensively, Bryan Grimes (Albany, N.Y.) and Jeremy Gerdvil (East Northport, N.Y.) recorded 11 and 10 total tackles respectively.
