Hawks Rally from First Set Loss to Beat Elmira 3-1

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks rallied from a tight 24-26 opening set loss to win three straight in commanding fashion to take the Empire 8 win against Elmira.

  • Record:  Hartwick (15-4, 6-1 Empire 8), Elmira (7-7, 2-5 Empire 8)
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • The Hawks and the Soaring Eagles battled point for point in the first set with Elmira eventually taking the win 26-24.
  • However, Hartwick battled back and took the next three sets.
  • Three Hawks finished with double digit kills.  Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.) led the way with 13, Kaileigh Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) picked up 11, and Colette Maloney (Williston Park, N.Y.) finished with 10.
  • Setter, Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) picked up 39 assists across the four sets and led the team with 12 digs.
  • Prior to the contest, the team honored seniors Sarah Petz (Webster, N.Y.) and Maloney.  Petz ended the day with two digs, and two momentum swinging aces on floaters just over the net.
  • Along with her 10 digs, Maloney notched seven digs and three service aces.

Hartwick wraps up their Empire 8 slate next weekend with road trips to Keuka and Utica on Friday night and Saturday afternoon respectively.
