Hawks Unable to Hold off Rochester’s 4th Quarter Rally, Fall 19-13

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Hawks went toe-to-toe in non-conference action with the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets, but were unable to hold off fourth quarter rally dropping the non-conference contest, 19-13 in Rochester.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • Rochester put up the first score of the contest on their first drive of the game with 10:54 left in the first quarter.
  • Hartwick went three-and-out on the next drive, but the defense was able to get the ball back to their offense after Bryan Grimes (Albany, N.Y.) picked off a pass in the endzone for a touchback.
  • The Hawks marched down the field only to have their field goal attempt blocked from 46 yards out.
  • On the following drive, Hartwick returned the favor when Richie Mercurio (Smithtown, N.Y.) blocked the Yellow Jackets' field goal attempt.  Owen Lawler (Enfield, Conn.) recovered the ball, returning it for a 68-yard touchdown.
  • After a Nick Andrade (Shelton, Conn.) PAT, the score was knotted up at 7-7 with 7:16 remaining in the half.
  • Hartwick's defense once again got the ball back into the hands of their offense as Grimes picked off his second pass of the contest on Rochester's next drive.
  • The Hawks capitalized on the opportunity working their way to the Yellow Jackets' 1-yard line.
  • Kyle Szokoli (Greenlawn, N.Y.) ran the ball in to give the Hawks a 16-7 advantage.
  • Unfortunately, Andrade's PAT was blocked and Rochester returned it for the defensive PAT.
  • With the Hawks up 13-9 at the start second half, neither squad could get their offense going as the defensive battle continued into the 4th quarter.
  • Rochester would eventually overcome the Hartwick lead with a 72-yard touchdown drive.
  • Down 16-13, Hartwick received the ball with 4:17 left on the clock.  However, the drive ended after just one play with a fumble.
  • The Yellow Jackets took advantage of the turnover, ending the ensuing drive with a field goal to make the score 19-13.
  • The Hawks made one final push to tie up the contest with 43 seconds remaining in the game, but were unable to get into the endzone.
  • Szokoli finished the day with 122 passing yards, going 12 for 22 with a long of 42 yards.
  • Defensively the Hawks were led by Grimes who in addition to the two interceptions, posted a team-high 15 tackles.
  • Christian Robinson (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and Jules Pierre (West Babylon, N.Y.) also finished the afternoon with double-digit tackles with 13 and 12 respectively.

Hartwick will remain on the road for their final game of the season as they travel to SUNY Morrisville to take on the Mustangs in Empire 8 action on Saturday, November 12 at 1 PM.
