Hawks Edged by Herons in Grueling 5-set Affair

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Hartwick opened the first night of their home tournament with a heartbreaking loss against the William Smith Herons 2-3 in a back-and-forth battle.

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 2, William Smith 3 (28-26, 15-25, 20-25, 25-23, 16-18)
  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Record:  Hartwick (6-2), William Smith (4-3)
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • The Hawks and the Herons matched each other point for point in the first set, pushing each other past the normal 25 points with Hartwick eventually pulling out the win 28-26.
  • William Smith rebounded, taking the next two sets from the host squad.
  • Hartwick was able to re-group to win the 4th set 25-23 to force the contest into the fifth and deciding set.
  • Again, the two squads matched each other point for point.  Unfortunately, the Hawks could not gain the advantage over the Herons, dropping the fifth set 16-18, allowing William Smith to take the match 3-2.
  • Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) paced the offense for the Hawks, recording 16 kills while only committing three attack errors across the five sets.
  • Kaileigh Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) and Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.) both posted 13 kills, while Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) picked up 12.
  • Not only did Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) pick up 49 assists, she also posted a team-high three aces.
 
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
Hartwick returns to their home court tomorrow for two more matches.  In the morning match, the Hawks take on the Mustangs from SUNY Morrisville at 10 AM.  The afternoon match has the Hawks squaring off with the Alfred State Pioneers at 12:30 PM.
