WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks went toe-to-toe with the Golden Flyers for five sets eventually winning the critical Empire 8 match-up with a come-from-behind win in the fifth set.
  • Hartwick picked up the win in the first set 25-21.
  • Nazareth evened up the match with a 25-17 win in the second set.
  • Despite the momentum swinging back to the Hawks' side in the third set with a 25-20 win, it swung right back to Naz in the fourth.
  • Hartwick found themselves down 3-0 early in the fifth and deciding set, but a kill from Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) gave the Hawks the side out and a chance to even the score.
  • The fifth set continued to mirror the rest of the match as both teams continued to trade points.
  • The Golden Flyers pulled away at one point, taking a 12-9 lead.  However, the Hawks rallied back using all facets of their game.
  • Colette Maloney (Williston Park, N.Y.) and Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) combined for a block that would knot the score up at 12 all.
  • With the score now tied at 12-12, Nazareth was forced to take a timeout, but it would not matter as the Hawks put away three straight points off of a Silofau kill, a Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) ace, and a Malony kill to take the 15-12 set win and the 3-2 match win.
  • Maloney and Kaileigh Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) led the offense with 15 kills each.
  • Hornick put away nine kills to go along with her 41 assists.
  • Hartwick was a force at the net defensively as well, posting 16 total blocks.  Swartz contributed on six of those alone.
