Donovan Named Next Women’s Volleyball Coach

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Director of Athletics, John Czarnecki recently announced the hiring of Janet Donovan as the next Head Women's Volleyball Coach.

Donovan, who has spent the past six years as the program's assistant coach will assume head coaching duties on April 1.

As an assistant, the Hawks have made program history over the last two seasons, qualifying for the Empire 8 playoffs in 2021 and 2022.  Additionally in 2022, the team appeared in the Empire 8 championship for the first time.

Prior to her time at Hartwick, Donovan was the Head Coach at Ithaca College, earning multiple conference championships, most recently in her final season at the helm in 2015.  Across her career, her teams have made 13 NCAA tournament appearances, including two Final Four appearances.  She has also coached 26 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Americans, two AVCA National Players of the Week, one AVCA All-Region Rookie of the Year, and 22 AVCA Academic All-Americans.

Donovan's 698-305 career record as a head coach currently ranks in the top 10 among current NCAA Division III coaches and 17th all-time among all Division III coaches.

"I am extremely thankful to President Reisberg, John Czarnecki, Betty Powell, and the search committee for the opportunity to represent Hartwick College as the next Head Volleyball Coach," remarked Donovan.  "I am excited and grateful for this opportunity to be able to lead this amazing group of young women and continue to be a part of this incredible program.  It is an honor for me to be the next Head Coach at Hartwick College and I look forward to our journey together!"

"I'd like to begin by thanking the search committee led by Director of Athletic Communications, Brittany Stroop," said Czarnecki.  "The committee took the necessary time to review each candidate and bring forward a group of finalists that were all capable of taking on the head coaching job and building upon the recent successes of the program."

Czarnecki continued, "In the end, Janet rose to the top of the pool aboard her energy and passion for the Hartwick Volleyball program that she has been a part of for the past six seasons as its assistant coach.  With a very successful history of being a head coach, Janet's understanding of, and connections to volleyball in New York and the Northeast, will allow the Hawks to continue to soar to new heights.  I am thrilled she accepted the position and I look forward to the great experiences the student-athletes will have under her leadership."
