Pioneers Power Past Hawks in E8 Football Action

Box Score UTICA, N.Y. – The Hawks opened up Empire 8 play with a road loss at Utica University on Saturday afternoon, 48-7.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • The Pioneers' offense sputtered on their first drive, during the ball over on downs to the Hawks.
  • Unfortunately, Utica returned the favor, forcing the Hawks to punt after a 17-play 50-yard drive.
  • Utica would go on to score twice late in the quarter to take a 14-0 lead.
  • Hartwick received the ball with 36 remaining in the first, but were unable to sustain their drive into the second quarter, punting again to the Pioneers.
  • The host team would go on to score a touchdown and field goal on their next two drives for a 24-0 lead.
  • However, the Hawks responded with just under four minutes left in the half, as James Sobol (Old Forge, Pa.) hooked up with Nate Rath (Newport, N.Y.) for a 3-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 6-play, 75-yard drive.
  • Down, 24-7 entering the second half, the Hawks received the kickoff but were forced into a three-and-out.
  • It was all Utica from that point on as the Pioneers went on to score another 24 points across the final two quarters to claim the 48-7 win.
  • The Hawks netted 189 yards through the air, 122 of which were from Sobol.
  • Haven Marascio (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) led Hartwick in receiving, posting 64 yards on three catches with Rath close behind with 55 yards on three catches.
  • Defensively, Jules Pierre (West Babylon, N.Y.) notched five solo tackles and seven assisted tackles, while Michael Lombardi (Wantagh, N.Y.) picked up two solo tackles and seven assisted tackles.

The Hawks turn their attention to their next Empire 8 opponent with a road trip to SUNY Brockport on Saturday, October 7 for a 1 PM kickoff.
