WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
The Hawks matched up with the Highlanders for their second straight home match, coming off a Wednesday victory over defending league champions Elmira College.
-
Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.) and the Hawks would be tested early by the Highlanders, posting their first shot of the game at the four minute mark as Gesamondo picked up his first save of the day.
-
Houghton would generate two more shots and two corners in the first twenty minutes of the game but Coach Scott's squad was able to bear down and keep their opposition from getting on the scoreboard.
-
Joseph Allen (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had a stellar day on the backline, coming up with a big clear with a slide tackle in the box to deflate a Highlander attack.
-
The first shot of the day for the Hawks was a fierce strike from the foot of Jake Daly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) but was unfortunately halted by the Houghton keeper.
-
Building off their last attack, the Hawks pushed down the field with purpose as the first half began to wither away, earning a free kick off a Highlander foul.
-
From just behind the midfield line, Jace Riegel (Owego, N.Y.) sent a ball into the box with purpose, a Houghton defender was able to redirect it to a teammate but a failed clearance put the Highlanders in danger.
-
Will Napierala (Endwell, N.Y.) ignited the attack, intercepting the pass and dishing it off to Alejandro Lopez Cabrera (Las Palmas, Spain) at the top of the box. Lopez Cabrera connected with Hunter Bulich (Catskill, N.Y.) in the box with a great one touch pass and Bulich was able to cross the ball to a lurking Napierala in front of the net for the score in the 44th minute.
-
The Hawks carried the same intensity into the second half, working their way down the field and posting a shot but missing wide in the opening minute.
-
The Highlanders responded back with two shots of their own but were unable to find an answer to the Hartwick defense.
-
Hartwick controlled the ball in the midfield for the majority of the game, connecting a wide array of passes as they attempted to protect their one goal lead.
-
Houghton showed late life, giving it their all in attempts of a comeback in the final 25 minutes.
-
Nick Nowak (Shoreham, N.Y.) was a bright spot on the stout Hawk back line, coming up with several big tackles in the second half.
-
Despite the Highlander pressure, the Royal Blue and White displayed brilliant counter attack ability, responding with shots of their own but were unable to put together an end product.
-
The Hawks stood their ground for the remainder of the game, meshing well on both sides of the ball, picking up back to back clean sheet conference victories.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT
"It's great to have won another game to make it three wins in a row. The team deserves immense credit for doing so. There were definitely chances in the second half where we have given ourselves room to breathe, but we battled hard to keep a clean sheet and win the game."
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will head to Utica University for an Empire 8 conference matchup against the Pioneers on Wednesday, October 16th at 7PM.
