WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks matched up with the Pioneers for the first time since meeting in the Empire 8 Quarterfinal last year where Hartwick was able to come away with the victory.

  • Utica displayed early pressure, earning their first corner at the two minute mark for the defense's first test.

  • Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.) picked up his first two saves of the day, denying a Utica forward's two attacks in two minutes.

  • Gesamondo notched his third save before the Hawks were able to flip the pressure back onto Utica, posting their first shot of the match in the 18th minute.

  • Hartwick posted its final two chances in the 20th and 21st minute but were unable to find an end product as the tightly contested affair continued.

  • The Hawks registered their lone corner of the half at the 27 minute mark but were turned away by the Pioneers.

  • The Royal Blue and White were tested two more times before the first half came to a close with Gesamondo picking up a save in the 34th minute and the defense forcing an off-target shot in the final seconds of the half.

  • Utica opened the second half with early pressure as they did the first half, posting two shots on goal and a corner but could not crack the Hartwick defense.

  • The Hawks responded with two corners and a shot on goal of their own but could not find the back of the net.

  • After working their way into the attacking third, Terriek Brown (Greene, N.Y.) was able to corral a loose ball and head it into a crowded box, Jake Daly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was able to put it on target but was denied by the Utica keeper. Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) was in the right place at the right time, tapping the loose ball past the keeper to put the Hawks on the board in the 57th minute.

  • Utica attempted to equalize in the 63rd minute but were turned away by Gesamondo.

  • After connecting a few key passes, the Hawks found themselves in dangerous territory as Ordonez Acosta pushed the pace, cutting through the Utica defense and sending a strike from outside the box past the keeper for the score in the 66th minute.

  • The Hawks protected their lead for the rest of the game, only allowing two shots on goal after the second score as Hartwick picked up their fourth consecutive victory.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT

"The first half was tightly contested, as was the second. Overall, the game came down to heart and desire to keep a clean sheet, but with Andres notching a double in the process, his second goal being a great individual goal, but that's what he's capable of. The team deserves enormous credit for making this four wins from four in conference play having lost the opening four. It takes bucket loads of character for this to happen, but we've shown we're up for the fight."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will look to defend home field against St. John Fisher on Saturday, October 19th at 2:30 PM.
