Hawks Fall to Cardinals' Two-Goal Second Half

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Men's Soccer Team hosted the St. John Fisher Cardinals for a pivotal Empire 8 conference match up on Elmore Field.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: St. John Fisher 2 Hartwick 0

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records: St. John Fisher (7-4-4, 6-1-2) (Hartwick (6-7-1, 4-5 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks geared up for their conference matchup against the Cardinals, coming in winners of four straight matches, outscoring their opponents 10-1 in that span.

  • Hartwick looked to carry that excellence into today's match, kicking off the tightly contested first half with high intensity.

  • The Cardinals were the first to post a shot on goal, testing Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.) with a strike from outside the box, headed towards the upper right corner but was knocked away by Gesamondo.

  • St. John Fisher earned their first corner after the Hartwick save, generating another shot but the defense of the Royal Blue and White were able to turn them away.

  • Coach Scott's squad looked to get more involved on the attacking front, registering their first shot on goal with a rip from Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) but was halted by the diving Cardinal keeper in the 13th minute.

  • Hartwick posted its first corner in the 21st minute after working their way down the field through a wide spread of connecting passes, Ordonez Acosta tested the Cardinal keeper once more but could not find the back of the net.

  • St. John Fisher worked their way up the pitch and responded with a shot on goal of their own in the 23rd minute, despite the oncoming pressure, Gesamondo was able to corral his second save of the day.

  • The remainder of the first half was spent battling in the midfield with the final chance of the half coming via corner kick for the Hawks in the 41st minute.

  • The corner was turned away by the Cardinals to wrap up the scoreless first half, as both teams were evenly matched, each posting four shots and two saves, with the Hawks taking the corner advantage 3-1.

  • The second half got off to a quick start with St. John Fisher got on the scoreboard in the 50th minute, sending a cross into the box and connecting with a Cardinal at the far post for the first score of the match.

  • Hartwick was quick to answer back, displaying their resilience as they've done many times before this season,  generating a shot from Terriek Brown (Greene, N.Y.) in less than a minute after the Fisher goal but were halted by the keeper once again.

  • St. John Fisher kept up their momentum, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box and extending their lead to two goals in the 56th minute.

  • The Hawks worked hard to get back into the game but as Fisher switched to a more defensive mindset, the Hawks struggled to formulate a complete attack.

  • Hartwick locked back in defensively, not allowing the Cardinals to get into the final third in the final 20 minutes besides a corner kick. But as the clock continued to work against the Hawks, they would eventually run out of time.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT

"The team gave a good effort today and generally speaking, we can take positives from this. The first half was excellent, but to lose a goal within five minutes of the restart was the last thing we needed. We responded well and we kept fighting throughout the second half, but conceding the second goal didn't help matters. It's all about dusting ourselves down for the next game."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will hit the road to face off against Alfred University in an Empire 8 conference matchup on Saturday, October 26th at 2:30PM.
