WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
The Hawks prepared themselves for an important battle against the Saxons, with a victory earning them a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament.
-
Hartwick was faced with early adversity, beginning the game with the ball at their feet but a solid clearance to a Saxon attacker making a run into Hawk territory, led to a push with numbers for an early goal 29 seconds in.
-
Alfred posted a shot on goal in their following attack, finding a shot from outside the box, but was halted by the gloves of Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.).
-
The first shot of the day for the Hawks belonged to Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) who struck from distance but missed wide.
-
Coach Scott's squad continued to work hard and received their first corner of the day at the ten minute mark but were unable to find a Hawk in the box.
-
Hartwick began to shift the tide as they started to unravel the Saxon defense, transitioning seamlessly into Alfred territory with more consistency.
-
It was a very physical affair between both teams as they exchanged fouls and yellow cards, vying for possession in the midfield.
-
The Hawks capitalized on a Saxon foul in their defensive midfield as Joseph Allen (Clifton Park, N.Y.) lined up for the free kick. Allen brilliantly placed a dangerous ball in front of the box, bouncing between the two teams into the box, Jake Daly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) blitzed the loose ball and chipped the oncoming goalkeeper with finesse to equalize in the 40th minute.
-
Hartwick entered the second half with a very clear intention to score once again, but were called for offsides in their first attack.
-
Gesamondo was faced with a Saxon shot on goal and collected his first save of the half in the 51st minute.
-
Alfred looked to take back their lead as they posted three corners in the following fifteen minutes but the Hawk defense held their ground.
-
An errant pass from the Saxons proved to be costly as Jon Smith (Bremen, Ga.) wrestled the ball away from an Alfred defender and pushed his way down the field with purpose. Smith was able to use his speed to get away from the defenders and slot a ball past the oncoming keeper for the go-ahead score in the 73rd minute for an impactful first collegiate goal.
-
The Hawks looked to protect their lead for the final seventeen minutes but the Saxons weren't willing to go away quietly. Alfred was able to create a dangerous chance with five minutes left on the scoreboard, almost finding the equalizer but the goal was erased due to an offsides call.
-
Hartwick was able to battle their way through the early adversity and secure the victory over Alfred, securing an Empire 8 Tournament berth for the third straight season.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT
"Clinching a playoff spot from today's win was so gratifying. We've dealt with so many setbacks this season, but we've never given up on achieving playoffs. Given everything the team has endured, they've still found a way of making the playoffs for the third consecutive season. It's a proud moment to be their coach, they have represented Hartwick by being true warriors."
