WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
Before the match, the Hawks recognized their four talented seniors, Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.), Pepe Moreno (San Luis Potosi, Mexico), Jace Riegel (Owego, N.Y.) and Jackson Gilstrap (Bethlehem, N.Y.).
-
The Hawks were ready to go from the starting whistle, displaying high intensity as they flew out the gates.
-
Hartwick waited little to no time to infiltrate the Gator defense, earning their first corner kick in the second minute.
-
Jake Daly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) sent a ball into the box from the corner attempt that was knocked back towards Daly. Daly remained composed, took a touch and laced a low missile past the outstretched keeper, finding the back of the net to get the Hawks on the board in the third minute.
-
Coach Scott's squad continued to up the intensity, notching three more corners in the first ten minutes but were unable to find the back of the net off the corner again.
-
Daly and the Hawks continued to soar around the field as they dominated the midfield, possessing the ball for majority of the half as Daly sent a through ball over the defense, jump starting another attack for the Hawks.
-
The brilliant lob from Daly found the feet of Kayden Zachgo (Warwick, N.Y.) in a one on one situation, Zachgo used his speed and frame to get around the defender. Zachgo's pace proved to be too much for the keeper as well as he ran past the keeper and scored the second goal of the game in the 15th minute.
-
Hartwick picked up three more corner kicks before Sage began to show some resistance, posting their first shot of the game that found the gloves of Jackson Gilstrap (Bethlehem, Pa.).
-
The Hawks faced two more Sage corners but were able to stand tall and deny the Gators of any scoring opportunities, taking their two goal lead into the half.
-
Gesamondo relieved Gilstrap of his goal keeping duties in the second half, being tested early in his time in between the posts, notching his first save of the half in the 53rd minute.
-
Sage seemed to get their attack working as they earned a corner kick and followed with a shot on goal but Gesamondo and the Hawks continued to mesh well and defend at a high rate.
-
Hartwick continued to face pressure from the Gators as they attempted to mount a comeback, registering another corner and a shot on goal. Gesamondo garnered his 100th save in a Hawks uniform in the 66th minute.
-
A Hawk foul in the box proved to be costly as the Gators got on the board via penalty kick in the 71st minute.
-
Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) almost extended the lead back to two with a wonderful strike from outside the box, destined for the top left side of the goal but an athletic save from the Sage keeper kept the Gators in the competition.
-
The Hawks earned yet another corner as they looked to get some breathing room. A ball into the box caused chaos for both squads, Riegel was able to get a foot on the ball as Drew Cover (Fayetteville, Pa.) pounced on the loose ball and scored his first collegiate goal in the 79th minute.
-
Sage's final attempts to get back into the game came from a corner and a shot on goal in the 88th and 89th minute as the Hawks capped off their 2024 regular season with a great team showing.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT
"It was great to win on Senior Night and gain our 8th win of the season. Senior back-up goal keeper Jackson Gilstrap had a great first half and I was delighted for him in particular. We dominated the first half with Jake Daly scoring a brilliant opening goal, and then Kayden Zachgo scored a very composed second goal. The second half could have been better up to when Sage scored from a penalty kick, but when goalkeeper turned striker Drew Cover scored to make 3-1, we never looked back."
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will head to SUNY Geneseo for the 2024 Empire 8 Men's Soccer Championship Tournament Quarterfinals against the Knights on Saturday, November 2nd at 3:30.
