WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The sixth seeded Hartwick Hawks geared up for an Empire 8 quarterfinal matchup against new conference foe and No.3 seed SUNY Geneseo. The Hawks were defeated by the Knights 1-0 in their conference opener on Sep. 14 at SUNY Geneseo.

  • The Hawks were put to the test within the opening minute as the Knights registered the first shot of the match but were thwarted by Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.).

  • Hartwick was quick to return the pressure, working their way down the pitch and posting the first corner of afternoon at the three minute mark but was cleared away.

  • SUNY Geneseo posted a shot on goal in the ninth minute that was denied by the crossbar but the Knights were quick to pounce on the loose ball to take the lead.

  • Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) posted the first look for the Hawks in the 15th minute, missing high but giving the team something to build on.

  • Jake Daly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tested the Geneseo goalkeeper in the 20th minute but the shot was saved.

  • The remaining twenty five minutes saw both teams exchange possession and throw-ins as the battle for midfield ensued. The Knights posted the final corner in the 24th minute and Daly posted the final shot in the 43rd minute but was off target as the Hawks trailed entering half.

  • With the second half underway, the physical affair intensified with teams exchanging fouls in the first seven minutes.

  • Hartwick did not shy away from Knight intensity as they began to pressure Geneseo and work into the attacking midfield.

  • After connecting a string of passes, defender Joseph Allen (Clifton Park, N.Y.) sent in a brilliant cross into the box from the right wing. Hunter Bulich (Catskill, N.Y.) was able to rise above heavy traffic and head the ball into the left side of the netting, past the outstretched keeper to equalize the game in the 64th minute.

  • The Hawks began to click, earning corners in the 66th and 68th minute but could not find their second goal of the game.

  • As the battle in the midfield progressed, Geneseo was able to break through and post a corner in the 74th minute. Gesamondo was able to use his height and frame to elevate himself over the crowd and snag the incoming lob to clear any possible danger.

  • Hartwick was faced with a dangerous chance in the 89th minute as a loose ball approached the ball with speed with an oncoming Knight following close behind. Gesamondo was able to slide in and secure the ball just before a Knight attacker was able to get a cleat behind it.

  • The Hawks formulated a counter attack and were able to post a corner kick in the final thirty seconds but found the side netting of the goal as regulation came to a close, knotted at one.

  • Coach Scott's squad dominated the first ten minutes of overtime, outshooting Geneseo four shots to none but could not find the back of the net as Daly's shot hit the crossbar and Nick Nowak's (Shoreham, N.Y.) attempt off the rebound was saved in the 99th minute.

  • The second ten minute portion of overtime was tightly contested as both teams posted one shot a piece with Gesamondo notching a save within the final two minutes once again.

  • Despite the twenty minute overtime period, the two teams remained deadlocked at one a piece. SUNY Geneseo began the penalty kick shootout with a goal to go up 1-0 as they looked to get to five first.

  • Alejandro Lopez Cabrera (Las Palmas, Spain) was tasked with the opening penalty for the Hawks and capitalized on his opportunity, sinking the penalty to tie.

  • Geneseo converted on their second attempt but Kayden Zachgo (Warwick, N.Y) answered back by securing a second point for the Hawks as well.

  • After the Knights scored on their third penalty, Nowak knocked down his attempt to keep the back and forth battle as intense as ever.

  • Daly was able to stay composed and drilled his penalty into the left corner of the goal to tie at four.

  • With their backs against the wall down 5-4, Timmy McQueeney (Wading River, N.Y.) sent a rocket to the top of the net to equalize once again as pressure continued to mount.

  • The Knights missed high on their sixth penalty attempt, giving the Hawks the opportunity to clinch a victory in a sudden goal opportunity.

  • Jace Riegel (Owego, N.Y.) punched the Hawks a ticket to the Empire 8 Semifinals, lacing his penalty past the Knight keeper to give the Hawks a gritty 6-5 win.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT

"In terms of the game itself being 1-1, and being down 1-0 at half-time, we had to do more in the second half. We raised our game and got the goal back and over 90 minutes, 1-1 was fair. In overtime we worked hard and I don't think we looked like losing. As the penalty shootout went to sudden death, and with Jace Riegel taking the responsibility to send us to the semi-final, there was no doubt in my mind that he wouldn't score. Fair play to the five penalty takers who all held their nerve, and finally to Jace who scored in sudden death under immense pressure. As a team we are absolutely delighted."
