WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • After dropping their first match of the season to St. John Fisher last night, the Hawks came out swinging in the first set, jumping out to a six-point lead early in the first set, pushing points behind the serve of Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Me.).
  • The Golden Flyers eventually chipped away at the lead to tie the set up at 18-18.
  • However, Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) came up big down the stretch picking up three big kills to give Hartwick the 25-23 first set win.
  • The second set proved to be a dog fight in the early stages as the two teams went blow for blow until Nazareth began pulling away after picking up a big kill to go up 9-8.
  • The Golden Flyers did not look back from there, closing out the second set with a 25-19 win.
  • Hartwick trailed Nazareth throughout the third set, but stayed within striking distance, not allowing the Golden Flyers to build more than a four-point lead.
  • Unfortunately, the Hawks were unable to overtake the home squad, falling 25-21.
  • Nazareth looked as if they were going to cruise through the fourth set building a six-point lead to start the set, pushing points behind Leah Fusilli.
  • However, Arianna Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y.) served the Hawks back into the contest to get within three.
  • Down by three, the Hawks continued to claw their way back into the contest eventually tying the score up at 12-12.
  • Nazareth swung the momentum back into their favor with another strong push that the Hawks were unable to overcome, winning the set 25-17 to take the 3-1 match win.
  • Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) and Thornton both ended their afternoons with double-digit kills with 12 and 10 respectively.
